On Tuesday evening the Toronto Blue Jays continued their turn around of the 1982 season as they easily defeated Seattle 9-3. Starting pitcher Jim Gott (6 2/3 IP, 5 hits, 3 runs, 1 ER, 5 BB, 1 K) continued his fine campaign as he won for the 6th time.

Toronto (30-40) would strike first in the games opening inning. Damaso Garcia led off the game by lining a double into the right field corner. With one out, Garcia would score when Willie Upshaw’s ground ball went through the Mariners shortstop Julio Cruz for an error.

In the top of the 2nd inning, the Blue Jays were gifted another run. Mariners starting pitcher Gaylord Perry (7 IP, 8 hits, 7 runs, 5 ER, 1 BB) would hit lead off hitter Barry Bonnell with a pitch. Lloyd Moseby then chopped a ball at second baseman Paul Serna. With no play to make, Serna tried to get Bonnell at second base. His throw was off line and sailed into left field. Bonnell went to third base. and Moseby made it into second base. Rance Mulliniks bouncer to shortstop would score Bonnell. Perry then retired the next two hitters to get out of further trouble.

The Blue Jays blew the lid off the contest in the 3rd inning. Leading off, Hosken Powell singled into right field. Upshaw then walked. Ernie Whitt’s deep drive down the right field line stayed fair for his 7th home run of the season, increasing the Toronto lead to 5-0.

Powell and Upshaw teamed up for the Blue Jays next run in the 5th inning. Powell led off and once again singled into right field. Upshaw then shot the right center field gap for a RBI triple.

Seattle (28-43) crept back into the game in the bottom of the 7th. Gary Gray bounced a one out single into left field. With two outs, Dave Henderson reached on an error by Blue Jays third baseman Rance Mulliniks. Gott then walked Serna to load the bases. Gott’s day was done and Joey McLaughlin came in for Toronto. Julio Cruz would greet McLaughlin by lining a shot down the first base line. The hit cleared the bases as Cruz pulled into third base with a triple. McLaughlin then regrouped to get Manny Castillo on a ground ball to end the inning.

Over the final two innings, Toronto got those three runs back. In the 8th inning, Glenn Adams led off with a double to left center off Perry. Bonnell then reached on an error by Serna, putting runners on the corners. Perry’s night was over and Ed Vande Berg took over for the Mariners. With runners now on second and third and one out, pinch hitter Garth Iorg singled to left field to bring Adams home. Vande Berg then got Alfredo Griffin to bounce into an inning ending double play.

Vande Berg would not get an out in the 9th. Garcia led off with a walk and pinch hitter Jesse Barfield singled. Upshaw then put a ball into the right field corner. Garcia scored, Barfield advanced to third base and Upshaw ended up at second base with a run scoring double. With one out, Adams brought Barfield home with a sacrifice fly.

McLaughlin and Dave Geisel pitched shutout ball over the final two innings to secure the Toronto victory.

Mariners Notes: Julio Cruz was caught stealing tonight for the first time in 22 attempts; he also has hit in 5 straight contests….Seattle pitchers had 0 strikeouts in the game….Al Cowens extended his hitting streak to 10 games
