Monday, May 31, 1982 - New York Yankees at Toronto Blue Jays
Blue Jays Solid In Win
Toronto, Ontario
For the second consecutive day, the Toronto Blue Jays put together a solid performance. Fantastic pitching, air tight defense and five more runs on the scoreboard all bring a 5-2 win over New York. Starting pitcher Jim Gott (9 IP, 4 hits, 2 ER, 2 BB, 4 K) tossed a fantastic game at the Yankees. Even though the game started rather roughly, Gott would settle in and earn his 3rd win of ‘82. For the second straight day, the offense came together with five different Blue Jays knocking in runs. Midway through the game, the defense would help preserve a tie game.
The Yankees went up 1-0 in the top of the 1st inning. Dave Collins reached with one out when he lined a single into center field. After a Ken Griffey bouncer forced Collins at second base, Dave Winfield walked. Oscar Gamble then got Griffey home with a RBI single into center field.
In the bottom of the 1st, the Yankees defense would keep the Blue Jays off the scoreboard. Garth Iorg and Barry Bonnell each singled with one out, putting runners on the corners. Wayne Nordhagen would then lift a fly ball to Griffey in right field. Iorg broke for home, but Griffey’s throw was on the money to nail Iorg at the plate.
New York (29-19) built a 2-0 advantage in the 2nd inning. Graig Nettles led off by hitting his 13th home run of the season. Following the Nettles blast, Gott over the final eight innings would allow only two more base runners.
The Blue Jays began their comeback in the bottom of the 2nd. Jesse Barfield walked with one out off New York starter Tommy John (5 1/3 IP, 10 hits, 4 ER, 1 BB). Barfield would then take second base on a wild pitch by John. Buck Martinez then bounced a single into right field to score Barfield.
The comeback continued in the 3rd inning. With the bases empty and two out, Bonnell slammed a double off the left field wall. Nordhagen would get his RBI in this at-bat when he bounced a run scoring single into left field.
Toronto’s defense stepped up big in the top of the 5th. The Yankees had one out and Jerry Mumphrey at first base. Collins hit a rope to left center. Bonnell came over from center field and made a run scoring, sliding catch.
Toronto (17-32) delivered the knockout punch to John in the bottom of the 6th inning. Nordhagen singled to center with one out. Willie Upshaw who has struggled mightily this season came up big next. Upshaw laced a RBI double to left center to put the Blue Jays on top. Barfield would then get Upshaw home with a single back up the middle. After Martinez then singled, John was headed for the showers. Rudy May came in for the Yankees and fanned the two hitters he would face to end the 6th.
An insurance run in the bottom of the 7th inning gave the Blue Jays all the assurance they needed. Damaso Garcia led off with a single off May and then he swiped second base. Iorg’s chopper to third baseman Graig Nettles moved Garcia to third base. Bonnell then lifted a fly ball to Griffey in right field. Garcia would win the race home this time putting Toronto up 5-2.
Yankees Notes: Nettles’ long ball stretched his hitting streak to 5 games….Winfield saw the end of a 5 game hitting streak
Blue Jays Notes: Gott retired the final 14 Yankee hitters of the game; it was also Gott’s 3rd complete game of ‘82….the Toronto staff has now thrown 17 complete games this season….for Upshaw it was the 1st game winning RBI of the year

Monday, May 31, 1982 - Cincinnati Reds at Philadelphia Phillies
Ruthven A Perfect 7
Philadelphia, PA
Dick Ruthven (8 IP, 7 hits, 4 ER, 2 BB) ran his record to a perfect 7-0 on Monday evening at Veteran Stadium. Even though he didn’t have his best stuff, he was still able to get past Cincinnati 8-4.
The Phillies jumped on Reds starter Bruce Berenyi (2 1/3 IP, 6 hits, 5 ER, 2 BB, 2 K) for a three spot in the bottom of the 2nd inning. Mike Schmidt led off by drawing a walk and he then stole second base. Bo Diaz brought him home with a line drive single to left. Following a Garry Maddox strike out, Ivan DeJesus bounced a ball into left field for a single. Bob Dernier then found the left center field gap for a 2-run double.
Cincinnati (14-32) would come right back in the top of the 3rd inning. Rafael Landestoy lined a lead off single to center field. Berenyi’s bunt attempt would fail to move Landestoy to second as he was forced out, leaving Berenyi on first base. Eddie Milner then walked. Ruthven then got a fly out from Ron Oester, but he couldn’t end the inning. Dan Driessen brought home Berenyi with a single to right field. Dave Concepcion then cleared the bases with a triple and the game was tied 3-3.
Philadelphia would break the tie in the bottom of the 3rd. Manny Trillo singled to lead off. Gary Matthews then was walked. Schmidt would hit a come backer to the mound. The Reds were able to get Matthews at second base, but the Phillies would have men at the corners for Diaz. Diaz stayed hot when he lined a shot into the left field corner. Trillo scored easily and Schmidt raced home from first base to put Philadelphia up 5-3. It also ended the day for Berenyi.
In the 5th, Cincinnati got renewed hope when Driessen hit a solo home run. It was the 4th of the season for Driessen and it cut the deficit to 5-4.
The Reds hopes in this one would be dashed in the bottom of the 6th inning. Ruthven doubled to left center with one out. Pete Rose would advance Ruthven to third base with a line drive single into right field. Trillo then cleared the bases when he lined a double into the right field corner. It completed the day for Reds reliever Joe Price and they brought on Brad Lesley. After getting Matthews to ground out, Lesley gave up a line drive single to Schmidt. Trillo scampered home and Philadelphia (27-22) had a four run lead.
Ruthven finally tired out in the 9th inning after giving up a lead off single. Warren Brusstar came in to get the final three outs having to face only two hitters.
Reds Notes: Cesar Cedeno extended his hitting streak to 6 games….Driessen went 3-for-4 tonight
Phillies Notes: neither Ruthven or Brusstar struck out a hitter tonight….Rose was busy at 1B with 16 putouts….Diaz collected his 5th game winning RBI of ‘82….Garry Maddox has now hit safely in 7 consecutive contests

Monday, May 31, 1982 - Boston Red Sox at Oakland A’s
Underwood Silences Sox
Oakland, CA
It isn’t often that a middle relief pitcher steals the show. Today, the A’s Tom Underwood (4 2/3 IP, 1 hit, 1 BB, 6 K) did just that. Entering in the 4th inning and not departing into the 9th inning, Underwood handcuffed the Boston Red Sox helping to lead Oakland to an 8-5 victory. Underwood would retire the first 12 hitters he would face. At one point, he struck out five consecutive Red Sox hitters. The Oakland offense supplied three home runs and more than enough support.
Both starting pitchers were less than good today. It certainly didn’t help their cause that a 26 mph wind was blowing straight out. Boston’s John Tudor (3 1/3 IP, 6 hits, 5 ER, 2 BB, 4 K) making his first start after his suspension struggled throughout. Oakland’s Mike Norris (3 2/3 IP, 8 hits, 5 ER, 1 BB, 2 K) fared no better.
Oakland (24-27) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st inning. Rickey Henderson bounced a lead off single into left field. Tudor would then committ consecutive balks to move Henderson to third base. With Henderson at third, the number two whole hitter Davey Lopes lined a RBI single into center field.
Norris couldn’t keep the lead for long. In the top of the 2nd inning, Carney Lansford lifted his 6th home run of the season over the fence. Norris would re-group to retire the next two hitters before giving up a single to Rich Gedman. Tony Perez then launced a titanic drive to straight away center field. The ball cleared the fence for Perez’s 4th home run of ‘82 putting Boston up 3-1.
Quick responses were the theme for this game. In the bottom of the 2nd, the A’s did just that. Dan Meyer walked with one out. The struggling Tony Armas then connected for his 7th home run of the season to tie the score at 3-3.
A quiet third inning led to a loud fourth inning. Dave Stapleton led off with a walk for Boston (30-19). Reid Nichols would bounce a single into center field, with Stapleton advancing to second base. Norris then got Gedman to hit into a 4-6-3 double play. Needing one more out to end the Red Sox threat, Norris faced Perez. Perez delivered again with a run scoring double into right center. Glenn Hoffman then knocked in Perez with a line drive single to left and in the process knocked Norris from the game. Enter Underwood as he embarked on a sensational outing for Oakland.
The A’s would draw even in the bottom of the 4th inning. Jimmy Sexton doubled to left center to open the inning. Armas then walked with one out, putting runners on first and second. Dave McKay then laced a shot to left center. McKay’s double cleared the bases and evened the score at 5-5. Tudor left in favor of Bob Stanley. Stanley got the next two hitters to end the Oakland uprising.
Sexton put the A’s in front for good in the bottom of the 6th. Leading off against Stanley, Sexton drilled his 2nd home run of ‘82.
Insurance runs is what Oakland looked for in this one and in the bottom of the 7th they received two big runs. Lopes reached on an one out error by Red Sox shortstop Glenn Hoffman. Designated hitter Jeff Burroughs then took Stanley deep for his 9th home run of the season.
Underwood would yield a one out single to pinch hitter Carl Yastrzemski. Manager Billy Martin, without closer Dave Beard available called upon Fernando Arroyo. Arroyo walked Rick Miller to put two Boston runners on base. Arroyo then battled Hoffman. Hoffman just missed a game tying home run when his shot down the left field line hooked foul. Eventually, Arroyo won the battle when Hoffman flew out to left center field. Jerry Remy was Boston’s last hope, but he bounced out to A’s second baseman Davey Lopes to end the game.
Red Sox Notes: the home run by Lansford extended his hitting streak to 9 games….over the last two games, Boston has surrendered 16 runs
A’s Notes: Sexton got credit for his 2nd game winning RBI of the season….the victory snapped a 5 game losing skid….only 2-of-17 hitters that Underwood faced would reach base

Monday, May 31, 1982 - Los Angeles Dodgers at Pittsburgh Pirates
Rhoden Out Does Reuss
Pittsburgh, PA
A rematch of two top National League pitchers took place Monday night at Three Rivers Stadium. Once again, it was the pitchers who dominated in this one.
Los Angeles’ Jerry Reuss (7 IP, 2 hits, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 K) continued his fine work in ‘82. Unfortunately for Reuss, his offense didn’t support him on this night and he took his 1st loss of the season.
Pittsburgh’s Rick Rhoden (9 IP, 6 hits, 1 BB, 9 K) continued his fine beginning to ‘82. His offense gave him the run he needed as he won for the 6th time this year.
Los Angeles (35-14) would get only two base runners as far as second base. Their best hope came in the 4th inning when Ron Cey tripled with two out. Rhoden then got Bill Russell to ground out to shortstop Dale Berra to end the inning.
Pittsburgh (28-19) tallied their lone run in the bottom of the 2nd inning. It was just two batters that did Reuss in. With one out, Mike Easler cracked a shot to right center. Before the Dodgers could relay the throw to the infield, Easler was perched on top of third base with a triple. Next up, Jason Thompson bounced a RBI single into center field.
The game was the second fastest in the ‘82 season, as it took all of 1 hour and 54 minutes to play.
Dodgers Notes: Dusty Baker did extend his hitting streak to 5 games
Pirates Notes: it was the 8th game winning RBI for Thompson this season….Rhoden pitched his 6th complete game and 3rd shutout of ‘82….the Pittsburgh staff now has 11 complete games and 6 shutouts for the season

Monday, May 31, 1982 - Detroit Tigers at California Angels
Herndon & Parrish Continue to Lead Detroit
Anaheim, CA
In a major league lineup, the middle of the order can carry a team. Nothing is more true about the red hot Detroit Tigers. Monday afternoon the Tigers won their 6th consecutive game, led by Larry Herndon and Lance Parrish. All they did was drive in all 7 runs, go 4-for-9 and score 4 runs in the Detroit 7-4 victory over California.
This one looked as if it would be a laugher from the get go. Four hitters into the contest, the Tigers were up 4-0. Lou Whitaker led off with an infield single and then advanced to third base on a single to right field by Kirk Gibson. Herndon then brought both teammates home with a 2-run double to left center. Parrish then knocked a Bruce Kison (7 IP, 5 hits, 5 ER, 4 BB, 5 K) delivery over the fence for his 10th home run of the season.
A laugher, it didn’t turn out that way. In fact, Kison settled in quite nicely. He settled in after the four hit, four run barrage to retire the next 14 Detroit hitters in a row. He would go a total of 6 2/3 innings of no-hit ball until he gave up an infield single to Enos Cabell with two out in the 7th inning.
Detroit (33-16) starter Milt Wilcox (5 2/3 IP, 8 hits, 4 ER, 2 BB, 3 K) breezed through the first three innings. He ran into trouble in the bottom of the 4th inning. Fred Lynn drew a lead off walk. Reggie Jackson then went deep for the second straight game, hitting his 6th home run of the season. The blast cut the Angels deficit to 4-2.
Wilcox continued to struggle in the 5th inning. Brian Downing connected for a one out, solo home run to right field. It was the 13th of the year for Downing. Lynn then lined a single into right field. After Jackson whiffed for the second out of the inning, Doug DeCinces lined a shot off the left field wall for a run scoring double. California (27-23) was back in the game as the score was knotted up at 4-4.
Kison walked Gibson to start the 8th inning. Angels manager Gene Mauch called upon Don Aase to keep the tie game. Detroit called upon Herndon & Parrish to lead their team once again. Once again, they came through. Herndon rapped a double to left to plate Gibson and put the Tigers up 5-4. Parrish connected for his 11th home run of the season to left field and Detroit was up 7-4.
A pair of Dave’s (Rucker & Tobik) would shut the door out of the bullpen for Detroit. They would combine to retire 10-of-11 hitters they would face over the final 3 1/3 innings to help seal the win for the Tigers.
Tigers Notes: Herndon extended his current hitting streak to 15 games (tied for 6th longest in the A.L. in ‘82); he also was credited with his 5th game winning RBI of the season….Hebner (6 games) and Whitaker (5 games) each saw their hitting streaks continue
Angels Notes: California is tops in the American League in fielding with a .991 fielding percentage

Monday, May 31, 1982 - San Diego Padres at Chicago Cubs
Cubs Hang On
Chicago, IL
Continuing to play fine ball, Chicago held on Monday afternoon for a 5-4 win over San Diego. The Padres continue to struggle to get on track in ‘82 as the gap between themselves and the last place Cincinnati Reds narrows.
Chicago (22-26) jumped on Padres starter Chris Welsh (4 2/3 IP, 7 hits, 5 ER, 3 BB, 2 K) from the very beginning. Bump Wills slugged a lead off double into right center. Welsh then walked Ryne Sandberg. Having recorded two outs, with runners now on second and third, Welsh faced Keith Moreland. Moreland made the Bleacher Bums day hitting his 5th home run of the season.
The Padres got back into the contest in the 3rd inning. Welsh led off by lining a single to left field off Cubs starter Ferguson Jenkins (7 2/3 IP, 9 hits, 4 ER, 3 BB, 3 K). Welsh would be retired on a force out at second base on a Gene Richards grounder. Jenkins then lost his control as he walked Broderick Perkins and Ruppert Jones to load the bases. With Terry Kennedy at the plate, Chicago catcher Jody Davis boxed a pitch for a passed ball, allowing the first run of the game to score for the Padres. Kennedy then lifted a deep enough fly ball to right field to bring Perkins home.
San Diego (17-32) evened things up in the top of the 5th. Again, Welsh singled to lead off. Richards and Perkins also singled to load the bases. Jenkins then hit Jones with a pitch to force in the tying run. The Padres then squandered an opportunity to take the lead. Kennedy struck out for the first out of the frame. Sixto Lezcano then hit into a double play to end the threat and keep the game tied at 3-3.
It didn’t stay tied long as the Cubs regained the lead in the bottom of the 5th inning, chasing Welsh from the game. Welsh actually struck out Sandberg and Bill Buckner to begin the inning. He would then surrender back-to-back singles to Davis and Moreland. Leon Durham then stroked a 2-run double into left center putting the Cubs up 5-3.
Richards would lead off the top of the 7th inning with his 6th triple of the season. Perkins then brought him home with a ground ball to the right side of the infield.
Jenkins worked into the 8th inning. He left after giving up a two out single to Garry Templeton. Closer Lee Smith came in and immediately yielded a single to pinch hitter Tim Flannery. He got out of the inning when pinch hitter Luis Salazar hit a one hop smash to second base.
San Diego continued to pound the ball off Smith in the top of the 9th. Richards lined a lead off single to left and Perkins lined a single to center beginning the inning. Lefty Willie Hernandez came in for Smith and struck out Jones. Kennedy then hit a comebacker to the mound. Hernandez was able to get the force at second base, but the relay to first base was late. With Lezcano due up next, Cubs skipper Lee Elia went to Bill Campbell. Lezcano laid into a Campbell delivery sending it to deep center field. Cubs center fielder Gary Woods just shy of the wall hauled in the long drive to end the game.
Padres Notes: San Diego has dropped 3 straight….Joe Lefebvre extended his hitting streak to 6 games….the Padres runs scored on a passed ball, sacrifice fly, hit batter and ground out
Cubs Notes: Woods was busy in center field this afternoon with 9 putouts….Durham got his 5th game winning RBI of ‘82….Wills left in the 6th inning after being spiked covering second base

Monday, May 31, 1982 - Atlanta Braves at New York Mets
Camp & Garber Blank Mets
New York, NY
Today was all about pitching at Shea Stadium. Mets starter Charlie Puleo (7 2/3 IP, 3 hits, 1 ER, 2 BB, 7 K) most definitely deserved a better outcome. New York did not support a stellar performance by Puleo as the Mets lost to the Braves 1-0.
Atlanta starter Rick Camp (7 IP, 6 hits, 1 BB, 6 K) was even better than Puleo. With his fine performance, Camp won his 3rd game of ‘82. Closer Gene Garber closed out the Mets and the shutout by blanking the home team over the final two innings. In so doing, Garber earned his 14th save of the season.
Twice New York (18-32) had a runner on second when a hitter lined a single to center field. The combination of a slow runner and the cannon arm of Dale Murphy stopped the runner each time at third base. Neither time did the runner make it home.
Puleo tossed no-hit ball at Atlanta (29-19) for the first 5 2/3 innings. Rafael Ramirez would end his bid at history when he doubled to left center field with two out in the top of the 6th inning.
The Braves broke through for the only run of the contest in the 8th inning. Glenn Hubbard lined a one out single into center field. Pinch hitter Bob Watson then struck out. Only needing one more out, Puleo issued a walk to Claudell Washington. Mets skipper George Bamberger turned to closer Neil Allen. Facing Allen, Ramirez bounced a RBI single into right field to score Hubbard with the sole run of the game.
Braves Notes: it is the 4th game winning RBI of the season for Ramirez….Dale Murphy continues to struggle going 0-for-4 today with 3 strikeouts
Mets Notes: New York is 2nd in the N.L. having turned 44 double plays….Bob Bailor had his 9 game hitting streak stopped this afternoon….Dave Kingman had a really rough day as he struck out all 4 times at the plate

Sunday, May 30, 1982 - Boston Red Sox at Seattle Mariners
Perry Silences Red Sox
Seattle, WA
Win #301 sure came a lot quicker for Gaylord Perry (7 IP, 8 hits, 1 ER, 1 BB, 6 K) than win #300. Perry was outstanding on Sunday evening going 7+ innings as the Mariners routed the Red Sox 8-1. Perry didn’t waver until Seattle had built a 5-0 lead behind the hitting of Al Cowens. When he did tire, Bill Caudill came in and retired all six hitters he faced to earn his 9th save of ‘82.
Seattle (19-32) jumped to a 1-0 advantage in the bottom of the 1st inning. Julio Cruz drew a walk off Dennis Eckersley (6 2/3 IP, 6 hits, 5 ER, 4 BB, 3 K) to begin the inning. He then swiped his 16th base of the season without being caught. With two out and Cruz on third base, Richie Zisk blooped a single over the head of Red Sox second baseman Jerry Remy to bring Cruz home.
In the bottom of the 3rd inning, the Mariners swatted their way to a 4-0 lead. Dave Henderson led off by bouncing a single into left field. With one out, Manny Castillo lined a single to center field, advancing Henderson to third base. Cowens then demolished an Eckersley pitch for his 7th home run of the season as it sailed over the left field fence.
The Mariners delivered the knockout blow to Eckersley in the bottom of the 7th. With two out, Henderson walked. Julio Cruz then bounced a single to center field and Castillo walked to load the bases. Uncharacteristically, Eckersley control got the best of him when he then walked Cowens to force in a run putting Seattle up 5-0. Luis Aponte took over for Boston (30-18) and he retired Zisk on a ground ball to end the inning.
Perry allowed his only run of the game leading off the 8th inning when Glenn Hoffman smacked his 5th home run of the season to left. Remy then singled and Carney Lansford doubled into the right field corner to put runners on second and third. Caudill came in at that point and shut the Red Sox out the rest of the way.
Three unearned runs crossed the plate in the bottom of the 8th for the Mariners. Bruce Bochte led off by reaching on an error by Boston first baseman Dave Stapleton. Todd Cruz singled with one out and Joe Simpson walked to load the bases. Aponte then got Henderson to fly out to shallow left field. Julio Cruz kept the inning going when he bounced a 2-run single into center field. Castillo did the same as he brought home Simpson with the final run of the contest.
Red Sox Notes: Boston only scored 5 runs in the 4 game series….Lansford has hit safely in 8 consecutive games….Reid Nichols saw the end of a 6 game hitting streak
Mariners Notes: Zisk got his 6th game winning RBI of the season….Castillo now has a 7 game hitting streak….with 4 RBI, Cowens has 40 RBI for the season

Sunday, May 30, 1982 - Milwaukee Brewers at California Angels
Foli Completes Angels Comeback
Anaheim, CA
California (27-22) took a page from the Milwaukee (30-17) script on Sunday afternoon. Slugging four home runs and staging a late comeback, the Angels took down the Brewers for the second consecutive day in 10 innings, 7-6.
The late comeback ruined a wonderful performance by Milwaukee starting pitcher Mike Caldwell (8 2/3 IP, 11 hits, 6 ER, 3 BB, 4 K). Needing just one more out, Caldwell could not finish off the game.
Milwaukee bolted to a 3-0 1st inning lead. Paul Molitor walked leading off against Angels starter Steve Renko (2 2/3 IP, 6 hits 5 ER, 3 BB, 1 K). Robin Yount then moved Molitor to third base with a single into center field. Renko then walked the bases loaded when he issued a free pass to Cecil Cooper. Ted Simmons would then plate Molitor and Yount with a 2-run single into right field. Following a ground out that left runners on the corners and a strikeout, Marshall Edwards lined a single into center field to chase Cooper home.
Playing long ball in the 2nd inning, California got back into the game. Reggie Jackson slugged his 5th home run of the season with one out. Fred Lynn followed Jackson with his 6th home run of the year to right center field.
In the top of the 3rd, Milwaukee used the long ball to regain a three run lead. The Angels also used some defense to keep themselves somewhat close and in the long run provide themselves a chance to win the game late. With one out, Ben Oglivie bounced a double down the right field line. Edwards stepped in with two out and hit the 1st home run of his major league career putting the Brewers up 5-2. Renko then walked Roy Howell and would then be pulled from the game. Dave Goltz (7 1/3 IP, 5 hits, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K) came in and gave up a single to Ed Romero, moving Howell to second base. Molitor was next and he grounded a single into left field. Howell headed for home on the play. Left fielder Brian Downing threw a strike to catcher Bob Boone who applied the tag on Howell. The third out kept a big run off the scoreboard as we would find out later.
Goltz would be absolutely superb the rest of the way for California, as he gave his team a chance to comeback. His only blemish came in the top of the 6th inning when Molitor led off by hitting his 6th home run of ‘82, putting Milwaukee on top 6-2.
The Angels comeback began in the bottom of the 6th. Bobby Grich led off by drawing a walk. Doug DeCinces then brought California within two runs by hitting a 2-run home run. It was the 12th home run of the campaign for DeCinces.
Caldwell and the Brewers maintained a two run late into the contest. With two out and the bases empty in the bottom of the 9th, Caldwell gave up a single to Ron Jackson. Brewers skipper Buck Rodgers stuck with Caldwell. The Angels Brian Downing had other plans. Downing stepped into a Caldwell offering and hit his 12th home run of the year to knot the score at 6-6. Jim Slaton was summoned from the Milwaukee bullpen. He yielded a single to Grich, but then struck out DeCinces to end the inning.
Milwaukee got a 2-out single by Edwards in the top of the 10th, but when pinch hitter Don Money fouled out the game traveled to the bottom of the inning.
Slaton retired Don Baylor on a fly ball to open the inning. He would then walk Reggie Jackson. Lynn then ripped a shot to right field. The ball came off the right field wall. Jackson steamed to third base, but was given the stop sign by third base coach Preston Gomez. Milwaukee pulled the defense in against Bob Boone. Boone’s one hopper to Yount at shortstop was the second out of the inning, leaving the game on Tim Foli’s bat. With two hits thus far in the game, Foli looked for the game winner. Foli took Slaton’s pitch and bounced it into center field to score Jackson, giving the Angels a 7-6 victory.

Just Enough for the Tigers
Oakland, CA
Detroit completed a sweep of their Sunday doubleheader and their four game set with Oakland on Sunday afternoon. Dan Petry (9 IP, 6 hits, 3 ER, 3 BB, 4 K) won for the 7th time in ‘82 and pitched his 8th complete game of the season. The offense provided the support Petry needed in a 4-3 win.
The Tigers went up 2-0 in the 3rd inning. First game hero Kirk Gibson led off the inning by slugging his 4th home run of the season. His grand slam in game one was the game winner for Detroit (32-16). Larry Herndon (4-for-5) then lined a single into left field. He would be retired at second base on a force play off the bat of Lance Parrish. Richie Hebner moved Parrish to second base with a single to right field. With two out, Glenn Wilson drove in Parrish with a single into right field.
In the bottom of the 3rd, Oakland (23-27) answered back. Rickey Henderson got things going with a one out single to right field. He would then steal second base, his 33rd of the year. Wayne Gross then connected off a Petry delivery for a drive over Gibson’s head in center. Henderson scored as Gross strolled into second base. Davey Lopes followed with a shot off the left field wall to plate Gross and tie the game at 2-2. Petry got out of the inning by getting the next two hitters to ground out.
Next inning, the Tigers answered back. Enos Cabell bounced a single into right field leading off. Lou Whitaker then hit a shot to left center field to drive in Cabell and put the Detroit back on top. Whitaker would advance to third base on a grounder by Gibson and then score on a RBI single by Herndon.
Oakland got closer with a tally in the bottom of the 8th inning. Pinch hitter Dave McKay led off with a single. Petry would then walk Henderson and Gross to load the bases. Tigers skipper Sparky Anderson stuck with Petry. Lopes hit a bouncer to third base for the first out of the inning. McKay scored on the play. Tony Armas then bounced into a force out at third and Joe Rudi struck out to end the A’s rally.
Petry then set down the A’s in order in the bottom of the 9th to seal the sweep for Detroit.

Late Launch Attack Wins for Detroit
Oakland, CA
Better late than not at all, that was the credo of Detroit on Sunday afternoon in the first game of their doubleheader against Oakland. Scoring seven runs over the final three innings led the Tigers past the A’s 8-4.
Detroit (31-16) scored early and then waited to the later innings to secure this win. Lou Whitaker led off the game with a double down the right field line off Oakland starter Rick Langford (6 1/3 IP, 10 hits, 5 ER, 1 BB, 2 K). Langford would retire the next two hitters, but Richie Hebner got to him. Hebner bounced a RBI single into right field to score Whitaker.
Larry Pashnick (6 IP, 6 hits, 3 ER, 4 BB, 3 K) took a shutout into the bottom of the 5th inning. Davey Lopes led off with a single, but would be promptly erased on a double play ball off the bat of Mike Heath. Looking as if the scoreless string would continue, Pashnick walked Jeff Newman to keep the inning alive. Jimmy Sexton moved Newman to second base when he singled up the middle. Rickey Henderson then walked to load the bases. Pashnick’s troubles continued when Wayne Gross bounced a single into right field. Newman and Sexton each scored as Henderson moved into second base. Not content at second base, Henderson swiped third base, his 32nd stolen base of the season. Jeff Burroughs then brought Henderson home with a line drive single into center field.
It stayed 3-1 in favor of the A’s until the 7th. Alan Trammell lined a single to right field leading off. After Enos Cabell fouled out, pinch hitter Howard Johnson bounced a single into right field. Langford’s troubles continued when Whitaker also singled to right to load the bases. Pinch hitter Kirk Gibson then dug in against Langford. Gibson picked on a Langford delivery and sent it out of the park for a grand slam home run. It was the 3rd home run of ‘82 for Gibson.
Oakland (23-26) nibbled closer in the 8th inning. Burroughs led off with a walk against Dave Rozema. Rozema then retired the next two hitters before running into trouble. Lopes reached on an infield single to keep the inning alive. Mike Heath would bring Burroughs home when he singled to left field. Rozema put down the rally when he got Newman to fly out to left fielder Larry Herndon.
The Tigers nailed the game shut by scoring three times in the top of the 9th inning. Gibson singled with one out of Tom Underwood. With Gibson still at first base and two out, Hebner stepped in against Fernando Arroyo. Hebner lifted a drive to deep right field for his 2nd home run of the season. The inning wasn’t over. John Wockenfuss lined a single into left field. Chet Lemon then reached on an error by Sexton at shortstop. Trammell’s ground ball single into center field brought Wockenfuss home. Arroyo then got Cabell to ground out to end the rally.
The A’s got a lead off double by Sexton to begin the 9th. Rozema then buckled down to retire the next three hitters to secure victory for Detroit. It was the 2nd save of the year for Rozema.
Tigers Notes: Herndon (13 games) and Johnson (12 games) both extended their hitting streaks….it is the 2nd time this season that Herndon has hit safely in 13 consecutive games….Gibson was credited with his 2nd game winning RBI of the year….Detroit has now won 4 consecutive games

Sunday, May 30, 1982 - Kansas City Royals at Texas Rangers
A Royals Rumble
Arlington, TX
Kansas City (24-23) owned this game at Arlington Stadium this afternoon. From beginning to end there was no doubt what the outcome would be. Superb pitching and plenty of hitting led the Royals to a 7-0 whitewash of the Texas Rangers.
Starting pitcher Paul Splittorff (9 IP, 4 hits, 4 BB, 5 K) had Texas (13-32) in the palm of his hand all afternoon long.
The Royals struck first in the 2nd inning. Lee May would walk with one out. Jerry Martin then lined a shot into the left field corner. K.C. gambled and sent May to the plate. A perfect throw by left fielder Leon Roberts to cutoff man Buddy Bell, followed by another perfect throw by Bell to catcher Jim Sundberg struck down May at the plate. Don Slaught then lined a single into right field. Rangers right fielder miss played the hop and Martin was able to score from second base.
In the 3rd, Kansas City again began a scoring rally with one out. Amos Otis lined a double to left center. He wouldn’t be at second base long as Frank White got him home with a ground ball into left field.
Hot hitting Hal McRae put the visitors up 4-0 in the 5th inning. White led off with a single. With one out off Rangers starter Rick Honeycutt (5 IP, 11 hits, 6 runs, 5 ER, 2 BB, 3 K), McRae launched his 11th home run of ‘82.
Honeycutt was chased by the Royals in the top of the 6th. Don Slaught led off with a double to left center. He advanced to third base on a single to left field by Greg Pryor. Onix Concepcion then chased both runners home when he slammed a double off the left field wall.
George Brett ended the scoring in the top of the 9th. Off Rangers relief pitcher Paul Mirabella, Brett sent his 7th home run of the season into the bleachers to finish the scoring on this day.
Royals Notes: Kansas City has now won 4 consecutive games….McRae (8 games) and Martin (6 games) each stay hot extending personal hitting streaks….for Splittorff it was the 1st complete game and shutout of the season….the Royals outscored the Rangers 21-7 in the 3-game series

Sunday, May 30, 1982 - New York Yankees at Minnesota Twins
Twins Take Down Yankees Behind Castillo
Minneapolis, MN
This season, Bobby Castillo (7 IP, 8 hits, 2 ER, 2 BB, 8 K) has not had much success. This afternoon, Castillo not only pitched well but he also got the necessary run support from his teammates. Put it all together and Minnesota has a 4-2 victory over New York.
Castillo would fall behind early. With one out in the top of the 2nd inning, Oscar Gamble connected for his 8th home run of the season. From this point forward, despite a couple of bumpy stretches, Castillo pitched very well.
Down by one run heading into the bottom of the 5th, the Twins bats woke up against Yankees starter Shane Rawley (6 IP, 10 hits, 4 ER, 4 K). Jesus Vega led off by reaching on an infield single. Sal Butera followed by lining a single into left field. Boomer Wells then teed off on a Rawley pitch stroking it into left center. New York (29-18) left fielder Dave Winfield cut the ball off holding Wells to a long RBI single. After John Castino struck out, Bobby Mitchell got Butera home with a line drive single into right field.
In the bottom of the 6th inning, Minnesota (15-35) flexed its muscles. Gary Gaetti went deep for the 11th time this season putting the Twins on top 3-1.
More muscle flexing happened in the bottom of the 7th. Castino led off with his 4th home run of the year, knocking Rawley out of the game.
Castillo would tire in the top of the 8th inning. Winfield led off by slamming a double off the left field wall. Roy Smalley then walked. Twins skipper Billy Gardner then brought on closer Ron Davis. Davis got Butch Wynegar to hit into a force play leaving runners on the corners. Gamble then connected off a Davis delivery. The ball came off the right field wall. Winfield scored, Wynegar advanced to third base and Gamble was stationed at second base after a RBI double. Davis then set down pinch hitter Jerry Mumphrey and Andre Robertson to end the Yankees uprising.
Graig Nettles started the top of the 9th with a single. Consecutive ground ball outs moved Nettles over to third base, setting up a show down between Winfield and Davis. Davis proved up to the task as Winfield lined out to shortstop Ron Washington to end the game. Davis earned his 7th save of the season.
Yankees Notes: Winfield stung the ball in all 5 plate appearances, extending his hitting streak to 5 games….the loss ended a 6 game winning streak for N.Y.
Twins Notes: Minnesota put the end to a 3 game losing skid….Mitchell earned his 2nd game winning RBI of the season

Sunday, May 30, 1982 - San Diego Padres at St. Louis Cardinals
Pair of Redbirds Lead the Way Past Padres
St. Louis, MO
Two former Padres led the Cardinals to victory on Sunday afternoon at Busch Memorial Stadium. Steve Mura (7 1/3 IP, 8 hits, 3 ER, 2 BB, 4 K) led the way on the mound. Ozzie Smith went 2-for-4 with an RBI and 7 assists at shortstop. A very hard fought series went the St. Louis way with a 4-3 win.
The Cardinals went up 1-0 in the 1st inning. Tommy Herr walked with one out and then swiped second base. Keith Hernandez then hit a bullet in the hole on the right side. Padres first baseman Kurt Bevacqua denied Hernandez by going to his back hand and throwing a pea to pitcher Juan Eichelberger (6 IP, 5 hits, 3 ER, 6 BB, 4 K) to get Hernandez. With Herr now on third base, George Hendrick bounced a RBI single into left field.
San Diego (17-31) not only came back in the 2nd inning, but they took the lead. Joe Lefebvre walked to lead off. Former Cardinal Garry Templeton then lined a RBI double into the left field corner. Templeton advanced to third base on a single by Alan Wiggins. With runners on the corners, Bevacqua walked to load the bases. Still nobody out, Eichelberger struck out. Lead off man Gene Richards then got Templeton home with a sacrifice fly to center field.
Darrell Porter led the charge back in the bottom of the 4th. Leading off, Porter tagged Eichelberger for his 1st home run of ‘82 to tie the game.
St. Louis (27-19) took the lead for good in the bottom of the 6th inning. David Green singled leading off but was forced at second base on a Porter ground ball. Mike Ramsey moved Porter to second base when he lined a single into center field. Ozzie Smith then brought Porter home when he bounced a RBI single into center field.
Facing Eric Show in the 7th, the Cardinals stretched their advantage. Hernandez hit a flare into center field that dropped and Hernandez legged it into a double. Hendrick quickly picked him up with a RBI single into center field as well.
Mura finally tired in the 8th inning. He would yield back-to-back one out singles to Terry Kennedy and Joe Lefebvre. Doug Bair came on and gave up a RBI single to Templeton as Kennedy scored on the hit. Bair then settled in and retired Wiggins and pinch hitter Luis Salazar to end the San Diego threat.
In the 9th, Bair had to also work out of some trouble. He would plunk Broderick Perkins with a pitch leading off. After striking out Richards, Bair gave up a single to Tim Flannery. Now with runners on first and second, one out, Bair got a 6-4 fielders choice off the bat of Sixto Lezcano. Kennedy then made a bid to tie the game with two out. He bounced a ball sharply into the hole at second base. Herr ranged far to his left for the ball, scooped it up and threw out Kennedy at first base to end the game. Bair earned his 1st save of ‘82.
Padres Notes: in 211 plate appearances this season, Kennedy has 1 walk….San Diego swiped 4 bags today, 3 by Wiggins
Cardinals Notes: Ozzie got credit for his 3rd game winning RBI of the season….Herr had his 5 game hitting streak end this afternoon….St. Louis was 5-for-6 in stealing bases today

Sunday, May 30, 1982 - Chicago White Sox at Cleveland Indians
Wacky White Sox Win
Cleveland, OH
On occasion, a major league baseball game has many twists and turns. This was the theme this afternoon at Municipal Stadium in Cleveland. Two teams went together with tired, short bullpens. The hitters went off on those pitchers that were available. An unlikely hero stepped up in the end. When it was all said and done Chicago defeated Cleveland 9-8.
Making his first start of the season, Cleveland’s Neal Heaton (3 1/3 IP, 7 hits, 5 ER, 2 BB, 2 K) got tagged for a 1st inning run. Rudy Law began the game with a line drive single into center field. He would swipe second base and advance to third base on a ground out by Steve Kemp to second base. Heaton then plunked Tom Paciorek. Greg Luzinski then got Law home with a RBI single into center.
Back came Cleveland in the bottom of the 2nd. Ron Hassey walked with one out off Sox starter Jerry Koosman (1 1/3 IP, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K). With Mike Fischlin at the plate, Koosman was removed from the contest with an injury. Chico Escarrega now had to assume the task of pitching deep into the contest, effectively and on short rest. Fischlin welcomed him to the game with a RBI double into left center. Von Hayes then lined a single into right field to move Fischlin to third base. Mike Hargrove bounced into a 3-6 force out as Fischlin crossed home plate.
Back came Chicago in the top of the 3rd inning. Steve Kemp led off by drawing a walk and stealing second base. He would eventually move to third base on a wild pitch by Heaton. The next two hitters made outs before Harold Baines delivered the hit to tie the score. Baines lined a single into center field to score Kemp.
Chicago (22-23) then took control of the contest in the 4th inning. Tony Bernazard walked to begin the inning and Aurelio Rodriguez singled. Bill Almon’s bouncer back to the mound left runners on the corners. Rudy Law then bounced a single into center field to score Bernazard. Heaton then unleashed a wild pitch to move runners to second and third base. Kemp delivered the knock out blow to Heaton with a 2-run single into center field putting the White Sox up 5-2. Bud Anderson came in and retired the next two hitters to put down Chicago.
A Cleveland comeback began in the bottom of the 5th. Rick Manning bounced a one out single into right field. With two out, Toby Harrah walked. Andre Thornton got Manning home with a RBI single to center field.
In the 6th inning, Cleveland seized the lead and control of the game. Von Hayes walked with one out and he would steal second base. Jack Perconte delivered Hayes home with a 2-out RBI single into center field. Manning followed with a single to right and Alan Bannister walked to load the bases. Harrah then cleared the bases with a double putting Cleveland up 7-5. Escarrega’s day was over and Salome Barojas came in for the White Sox. He would get Thornton to fly out to end the inning.
Down a pair, Chicago chipped at the deficit in the top of the 7th. Baines reached on a one out error by Fischlin, but would be forced at second base on a grounder by Carlton Fisk. Bernazard then found the left center field gap for a double to score Fisk bringing the White Sox to within 7-6.
The top of the 8th found the White Sox evening the score. Almon reached with a lead off infield single. He was forced at second on a grounder by Rudy Law, but Law then stole second base. After Kemp flied out, Paciorek lined a RBI single to left field off Cleveland closer Dan Spillner. Luzinski then pounded a shot off the left field wall. Cleveland left fielder Alan Bannister’s perfect relay to shortstop Mike Fischlin and Fischlin’s perfect throw home nailed Paciorek at the plate to end the inning.
Knotted up 7-7, Cleveland unwraped the tie game in the bottom of the 8th inning. Manning led off with his third straight single to right field and he advanced to second base on a perfect bunt by Bannister. After Harrah grounded out, Thornton lined a RBI single into center field to put Cleveland up 8-7.
Needing three outs, Spillner would yield a lead off single to Baines in the top of the 9th. He would then retire Fisk on a pop up and Bernazard on a foul ball. Pinch hitter Jerry Hairston stepped in the box between Spillner and a Cleveland win. Hairston laid into a Spillner pitcher for his 1st home run of ‘82.
Barojas then got three consecutive ground outs in the bottom of the 9th inning to seal the win for the White Sox.
White Sox Notes: Chicago banged out 17 hits in the game….Rudy Law (7 games), Fisk (7 games) and Almon (6 games) each extended hitting streaks this afternoon….7 different White Sox hitters drove in runs today
Indians Notes: Harrah stretched his hitting streak to 11 consecutive games….getting 12 hits and 5 walks proved to be not enough offense today

Sunday, May 30, 1982 - Toronto Blue Jays at Baltimore Orioles
Leal Bests Orioles
Baltimore, MD
For Luis Leal (9 IP, 6 hits, 1 run, 0 ER, 3 BB, 7 K), the beginning two months of the ‘82 season have been a nightmare. For the Toronto Blue Jays, April and May have been a nightmare to this team. On Sunday afternoon at Memorial Stadium, everything went perfectly for Leal and the Blue Jays. Leal stopped the Orioles bats and the Blue Jays bats gave him more than enough support in a 5-1 victory.
It didn’t take long for Toronto (16-32) to take charge of the game. Barry Bonnell lined a one out single to left in the 1st inning. Jesse Barfield then roped a shot into the left field corner. Bonnell raced around the bases on the RBI double by Barfield. On the throw home, Barfield went into third base. Willie Upshaw then hit a weak bouncer toward Orioles first baseman Eddie Murray. Barfield broke for home and Murray fired the ball toward home. Catcher Joe Nolan applied the tag but not after Barfield’s foot had already made contact with home plate.
Leal took a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the 1st and he cruised pretty much through the contest.
In the 3rd inning, the Blue Jays added to their advantage. Damaso Garcia leading off the inning bounced a single into center field. Bonnell then ripped a shot down the third base line. Garcia would speed home putting Toronto up 3-0.
Orioles starter Mike Flanagan (5 1/3 IP, 7 hits, 5 ER, 3 BB, 4 K) would see his day end in the 6th inning as the Blue Jays went up 5-0. Buck Martinez walked leading off and Lloyd Moseby did the same with one out. Alfredo Griffin then lined a shot to left center. Both Martinez and Moseby scored on the play. Flanagan headed for the clubhouse.
Baltimore (31-16) got a gift run in the bottom of the 9th. With the bases empty and two out, Nolan bounced a single into right field. Next up was John Lowenstein and he popped a pitch foul behind home plate. Toronto catcher Buck Martinez boxed the ball and saw the final out of the game drop to the turf. Lowenstein then took advantage of his extra swing by lining a RBI double into right center field.
Blue Jays Notes: Leal tossed his 3rd complete game of ‘82….Barfield notched his 4th game winning RBI of the campaign….the victory snapped a 4 game losing skid
Orioles Notes: Baltimore saw their 5 game winning streak end….Roenicke fanned 3 times and he saw a 7 game hitting streak end this afternoon

Sunday, May 30, 1982 - San Francisco Giants at Pittsburgh Pirates
Bucs Best Giants in Extras
Pittsburgh, PA
Spotting San Francisco a 3-0 advantage, Pittsburgh scored the final four runs of the game to take a 4-3 decision in 10 innings on Sunday afternoon.
Things got off to a great start for the Giants in the very 1st inning. Chili Davis lined a one out single to center field off Pirates starter Manny Sarmiento (7 IP, 3 hits, 3 runs, 2 ER, 6 BB, 7 K). Jack Clark stepped in next and stepped into a Sarmiento delivery for a 2-run home run. Clark now has 13 home runs in ‘82.
In the top of the 5th inning, San Francisco (23-26) went up 3-0. Joe Morgan led off by hitting the gap in left center for a double. Davis then walked putting two runners on base. Clark popped out on the infield before Reggie Smith reached on a fielders choice, leaving runners on the corners. Darrell Evans then chopped a grounder near the mound. Sarmiento’s throw was off target, pulling first baseman Jason Thompson off the bag allowing Morgan to score.
Having blanked the Bucs over the first 4 innings, San Francisco starter Atlee Hammaker (6 IP, 8 hits, 3 ER, 5 K) ran into trouble in the bottom of the 5th. Steve Nicosia led off with a double for Pittsburgh (27-19). Sarmiento then attempted to bunt Nicosia over to third base, but his hard bunt went on a hop to first baseman Reggie Smith. Smith threw out Nicosia at third base. With Sarmiento now on first base, Omar Moreno fouled out to the catcher Milt May. Johnny Ray then stepped up with a RBI double scoring Sarmiento to left center. Bill Madlock did the same as Ray raced home on the double.
Down a run, the Pirates evened things up in the bottom of the 7th inning. Once again, Nicosia led off with a hit. Dave Parker came in as a pinch runner and Tony Pena pinch hit for Sarmiento against Al Holland. Pena bounced a single into left field, moving Parker to second base. It was Moreno’s turn to lay down a bunt this time. His bunt ended up getting Parker thrown out at third base for the first out of the inning. Ray then flied out to left field. Madlock picked up his teammates with a line drive single into center field. Pena raced for home and beat the throw of Giants center fielder Chili Davis.
As the game moved on, the Giants continued to struggle offensively. Though they had many base runners (9 walks received), they stranded 11 runners for the game.
Pittsburgh got to Giants reliever Gary Lavelle in the bottom of the 10th inning. Ray doubled off the left field wall to lead off. Jimmy Smith (in for the injured Madlock) would then reach on an infield single with Ray moving to third base. Lavelle now faced a first and third situation with no outs. Pitcher Don Robinson pinch hit and struck out for the first out. With the infield drawn in, Jason Thompson bounced out to Morgan at second base. It left runners on second and third, with Lee Lacy at center stage. Lacy bounced the game winning single into left field giving the Buccos the victory.
Giants Notes: Morgan hit safely in his 12th consecutive game….in 65 2/3 innings this season, Hammaker has issued only 6 walks….San Francisco only had 4 hits today
Pirates Notes: Sarmiento and reliever Rod Scurry issued a combined 9 walks….Ray had 4 doubles in the contest, all from the right side….Madlock extended his hitting streak to 5 games; but left in the 10th inning after running into the grandstand railing chasing a foul ball….Sarmiento yielded his 1st home run ball in 52 innings to Jack Clark….Bill Robinson was tossed in the 7th by umpire Bruce Froemming for arguing a called third strike

Sunday, May 30, 1982 - Atlanta Braves at Philadelphia Phillies
Phillies Running On All Cylinders
Philadelphia, PA
Offense in baseball is a beautiful thing when it is working for your team. On Sunday afternoon, Philadelphia (26-22) had everything working for them in an 8-1 win over Atlanta. The hitters rapped out 15 hits against three Braves pitchers. The base runners swiped three bases for the day, and some unlikely run producers produced runs for the easy victory.
On the mound, Larry Christenson (9 IP, 3 hits, 1 ER, 7 BB, 8 K) was wildly effective. He would walk 5-of-the-first-11 hitters he would face. In doing so, he seemingly kept the Braves off balance for the entire game as he won for the 8th time in ‘82.
In fact, Atlanta (28-19) actually opened the scoring in the top of the 1st inning. Larry Whisenton walked to lead off but would be erased on a ground ball off the bat of Rafael Ramirez. Chris Chambliss followed by drawing a walk as well. The struggling Dale Murphy then bounced a RBI single into center field to score Ramirez.
Bo Diaz got the Phillies on the board in the bottom of the 2nd inning to tie the score at 1-1. Diaz went deep down the left field line off Braves starter Bob Walk (5 2/3 IP, 10 hits, 5 runs, 4 ER, 2 BB, 4 K) for his 3rd home run of the season.
The Phillies broke the tie in the bottom of the 4th as they tallied a run in the first of what would be five consecutive innings of attaining a run. Luis Aguayo led off with a triple to right center. Aguayo had replaced Mike Schmidt, after Schmidt was ejected in the 1st inning for arguing a called third strike by umpire Frank Pulli. With one out, Diaz then ripped a RBI double off the left field wall to put Philadelphia up 2-1.
In the 5th inning, the Phillies would add another run on to their lead. A two out rally began when Manny Trillo lined a single into center field. Trillo then swiped second base and advanced to third base on a single by Gary Matthews. Aguayo then bounced a grounder to Braves third baseman Randy Johnson. Johnson’s throw pulled first baseman Chris Chambliss off the bag as Trillo crossed home plate. Atlanta avoided another run from scoring on a superb play by Murphy in center field. Garry Maddox bounced a single to center and Matthews challenged the throwing ability of Murphy. Murphy won the challenge ending the inning with Philadelphia up 3-1.
George Vukovich started a 6th inning uprising with a single to right field. Another unlikely base stealer, Vukovich successfully stole second base. He would advance to third base on a line drive single to center field by Ivan DeJesus. Christenson then moved DeJesus up to second base with a perfect sacrifice bunt. Pete Rose then knocked Walk out of the game when he lined a 2-run double into the right field corner.
Braves reliever Al Hrabosky didn’t avoid the Phillies offense on this day. Matthews would put a ground ball into left field to start the 7th inning. After Aguayo fanned, Maddox put a shot into the left field corner. Matthews raced all the way around to score on the RBI double by Maddox.
Philadelphia also gave some offensive wrath to Atlanta pitcher Carlos Diaz in the 8th inning. DeJesus and Christenson each singled to start the frame. A chopper toward the mound by Rose resulted in an out at first base but the base runners moved to second and third. Trillo then put a ground ball through the left side for a 2-run single.
Christenson became the second National League pitcher to 8 wins as he joins the Astros Joe Niekro for the league lead in victories.
Braves Notes: the loss snapped a 4 game winning streak….Chambliss had his 6 game hitting streak halted….Walk allowed his 1st home run of the season to Diaz in the 2nd
Phillies Notes: Diaz earned his 4th game winning RBI of the season….the victory broke a 3 game losing skid….Maddox has now hit safely in 6 consecutive contests….Schmidt saw his 10 game hitting streak end this afternoon

Sunday, May 30, 1982 - Houston Astros at New York Mets
Big 5th Inning, Mets Win
New York, NY
This weekends series at Shea Stadium brought some really good baseball to the Big Apple. On Sunday afternoon, it would take a big 5th inning by the Mets to overcome the Astros. It also took an excellent pitching performance by Craig Swan (8 1/3 IP, 8 hits, 3 ER, 4 BB, 2 K) to lead New York to a 7-3 victory.
The home town Mets got things started in the bottom of the 1st inning. Ellis Valentine stepped in with two out and the bases empty. Valentine then unloaded his 5th home run of the season off Astros starter Bob Knepper (4 1/3 IP, 9 hits, 6 ER, 2 K).
Houston (24-24) would bounce right back in the top of the 2nd. Art Howe walked to lead off, setting the stage for teammate Danny Heep. Heep would deposit his 4th home run of the season over the right field wall to put the Astros up 2-1.
In the 5th inning, the Astros upped their advantage. Dickie Thon laced a double to left center field with one out. Terry Puhl followed by lining a single to center field. Thon raced toward the plate, center fielder Mookie Wilson’s throw sailed to the plate and they both arrived at the same time. Thon ran into Mets catcher Ron Hodges, dislodging the ball putting Houston up 3-1. With two out and Puhl at second base, Phil Garner lined a single to center. Puhl raced for home, Wilson’s throw sailed home and catcher John Stearns put the tag on Puhl to end the inning.
Knepper would run out of gas in the bottom of the 5th inning. Ron Gardenhire led off by bouncing a single into left field. Swan followed by punching a single into right field and Gardenhire advanced to third base. Wilson then got Gardenhire home with a liner to center. Both Swan and Wilson advanced a base when Bob Bailor bounced out to the right side of the infield. Valentine then drove in two more runs with a line drive to center. Dave Kingman capped off the scoring and sending Knepper to the showers when he slugged his 14th home run of ‘82.
New York (18-31) topped off their scoring in the bottom of the 8th. Joel Youngblood singled to left field leading off against Bert Roberge. He would then advance to second base on a passed ball by catcher Luis Pujols. George Foster then bounced a single into center field to plate Youngblood.
In the top of the 9th inning, Swan faltered. He yielded a one out single to pinch hitter Kiko Garcia and he walked pinch hitter Alan Ashby. Jesse Orosco was brought in for the Mets. He got Thon to bounce into a fielders choice and he fanned Puhl to end the game. Orosco earned his 3rd save of the season.
Astros Notes: not only was Puhl thrown out at the plate, but Ray Knight was robbed by George Foster of extra bases on a fine running catch in the 6th
Mets Notes: Valentine was credited with his 3rd game winning RBI of the season….Bailor has now hit safely in 9 consecutive games….Hodges left the game in the 5th after his collision at home plate with Dickie Thon

Sunday, May 30, 1982 - Cincinnati Reds at Montreal Expos
Reds Take This One in the 9th
Montreal, Quebec
The Cincinnati Reds took an early lead on Sunday afternoon at Olympic Stadium. Montreal would come back to tie the game, but the Reds never gave up the lead. In the final inning, the Reds were the better team as they edged the Expos 4-2. By winning, Cincinnati (14-31) took 2-of-3 this weekend against Montreal.
In the top of the 1st inning with one out, Ron Oester walked against Montreal starter Charlie Lea (7 IP, 5 hits, 2 ER, 2 BB). After Cesar Cedeno flied out, Dave Concepcion lined a ball to left center field. Oester raced home as Concepcion camped on second base with a RBI double.
Larry Biittner helped the Reds go up 2-0 in the 2nd. Biittner led off with his 1st triple of the season. Following a fly out by Alex Trevino, Rafael Landestoy bounced a RBI single into center field.
Through five innings, Cincinnati starter Tom Seaver (5 IP, 4 hits, 1 ER, 2 BB, 5 K) looked like the vintage Tom Seaver. Trouble awaited him in the bottom of the 6th inning. Tim Raines bounced a lead off single into right field. Raines then swiped his 24th base of the season. Terry Francona was up and he bounced a single into center field to score Raines. Seaver then walked Al Oliver before being removed from the game in favor of Ben Hayes. Hayes took care of the next three hitters keeping the Reds up 2-1.
Montreal (24-23) would get to Hayes in the bottom of the 7th. Pinch hitter Jerry White walked with two out. Raines then blooped a single into center field as White advanced to second base. Francona delivered his second RBI single of the game when he lined a shot into left field to score White. Hayes was done and Jim Kern came in for Cincinnati. After walking Oliver, he got Gary Carter to fly out to center field ending the inning.
Expos closer Jeff Reardon came into the game in the top of the 9th, hoping to take a tie score to the bottom half of the inning. Trouble came quick to Reardon when Biittner doubled with one out to left center. Duane Walker came in to pinch run for Biittner. Trevino then walked. Pinch hitter Wayne Krenchicki would then ground a single into center field. Walker challenged the arm of Francona. Francona threw a dart to Carter at the plate who put the tag on Walker for the second out of the 9th. With two outs and runners on second and third, pinch hitter Mike Vail stepped in against Reardon. He stepped into a Reardon pitch and lined it down the right field line for a 2-run double.
Up 4-2 heading to the bottom of the 9th inning, Cincinnati brought on closer Tom Hume. It was a bumpy beginning for Hume. He walked Raines and Francona lined a single to left field. Now having to face Oliver, Carter and Tim Wallach, it appeared a daunting task. Hume got Oliver and Carter to each fly out to center field. Needing one more out, Hume fanned Wallach to earn his 3rd save of ‘82.
Reds Notes: Cedeno has hit in 5 straight contests….Cincinnati outscored the Expos in the series 7-5
Expos Notes: Montreal stranded 12 base runners today….the pitching staff did not strike out a single batter….the Expos were without the injured Andre Dawson and Warren Cromartie

Saturday, May 29, 1982 - Boston Red Sox at Seattle Mariners
Red Sox Edge Mariners
Seattle, WA
For a third straight night the Red Sox and Mariners locked horns in a low scoring pitchers game. Boston won for the second time in this series by a final score of 3-2. The two teams have combined to score 9 runs in the three games.
Seattle (18-32) offensively started out very well, but they could not sustain it against Red Sox starter Brian Denman (6 1/3 IP, 10 hits, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K). Julio Cruz lined a single into left field to begin the bottom of the 1st inning. Cruz would advance to second base on a ground out by teammate Manny Castillo. Al Cowens then brought Cruz home with a line drive single into center field.
In the 2nd inning, the Mariners Gary Gray led off by hitting a shot off the left field wall for a double. After advancing to third base on a ground ball by Rick Sweet, Gray scored when Todd Cruz bounced a single into left field.
Over the final seven innings, Denman, Bob Stanley and Mark Clear would shutout Seattle the rest of the way scattering 7 hits. Boston (30-17) crept closer with a tally in the top of the 3rd inning. Jerry Remy singled with two out and the bases empty. He would then steal second base before scoring on a double by Wade Boggs off the right center field wall.
Mariners starter Gene Nelson (8 IP, 6 hits, 3 runs, 2 ER, 3 BB, 5 K) certainly deserved a better outcome tonight. The Red Sox took the lead off Nelson in the top of the 4th. Carney Lansford walked leading off and Reid Nichols singled into right field. Dave Stapleton then bounced into a double play leaving Lansford on third base. Tony Perez then reached on an infield single as Lansford scored on the hit. Needing one more out, Nelson got Rich Gedman to hit a ground ball at third baseman Manny Castillo. The ball glanced off Castillo’s glove into left center field, putting runners on second and third. Nelson then unleashed a wild pitch as Perez scored what turned out to be the winning run.
Clear locked down his 9th save of the seaon by leaving a runner on second base in both the 8th and 9th innings.
Red Sox Notes: Lansford (7 games) and Nichols (6 games) each extended their hitting streaks….Boston was out hit in the game 12-6….Stapleton hit into 3 double plays tonight
Mariners Notes: Seattle stranded 11 baserunners, 7 in scoring position….the M’s turned 4 double plays in the game….Gray (7 games) and Castillo (6 games) both kept their hitting streaks alive

Saturday, May 29, 1982 - San Diego Padres at St. Louis Cardinals
Wacky 9th Inning Goes the Cardinals Way
St. Louis, MO
A fast moving, basically non-eventful 1-0 game took some interesting twists down the stretch on Saturday night at Busch Memorial Stadium. When the wackiness of the 9th inning ended, the Cardinals came out on top 4-1.
Padres starter John Montefusco (7 IP, 4 hits, 1 ER, 3 BB, 6 K) pitched a second straight superb game. Cardinals starter John Stuper (7 IP, 3 hits, 3 BB, 4 K) continued his very fine ‘82 campaign.
St. Louis (26-19) broke through for the first run of the game in the bottom of the 3rd inning. Darrell Porter walked leading off and then surprised the Padres by stealing second base. Montefusco then struck out Mike Ramsey and Stuper. He would lose his plate location though when he also walked Lonnie Smith. Tommy Herr then bounced a RBI single into right field to score Porter.
Things then got very interesting and yes a bit wacky in the final frame. Bruce Sutter was two outs away from sewing up a win for the Cardinals and Stuper. Ruppert Jones bounced a ball directly at St. Louis first baseman Keith Hernandez. Hernandez’ glove didn’t get down in time as the ball scooted through his legs into right field. Jones raced to second base to put himself in scoring position. Terry Kennedy then bounced a ball again toward Hernandez. Hernandez flipped to Sutter covering first base for the second out of the inning as Jones went to third base. San Diego’s (17-30) best run producer, Sixto Lezcano was the next hitter. He would ground a single into center field to score Jones and tie the game at 1-1. Sutter then departed and Jeff Lahti got Joe Lefebvre to ground out to end the inning.
After working a 1-2-3 8th inning, Floyd Chiffer came out to start the 9th inning for the Padres. Facing George Hendrick, a fastball got to far inside and hit Hendrick. Willie McGee was next and he lined a single into right field. Hendrick stopped at second base on the hit. Lefty Gary Lucas came in for San Diego and faced pinch hitter David Green. Green ran into a Lucas delivery and sent it over the fence for his 1st home run of the season.
Padres Notes: San Diego managed only 4 singles in the game
Cardinals Notes: Herr has now hit safely in 5 consecutive games….Sutter had a second consecutive rough outing in as many nights

O’s McGregor Shuts Down Blue Jays
Baltimore, MD
Scott McGregor (9 IP, 7 hits, 1 ER, 4 K) was not going to be beaten on Saturday evening at Memorial Stadium. McGregor came out of the chute retiring the first 13 Toronto hitters on his way to a 7-1 win. It is the 5th win of the season for McGregor. Three home run support helped back the outstanding performance of McGregor.
The Orioles offense got going right out of the chute as well. Al Bumbry led off the bottom of the 1st inning with a triple off Blue Jays starter Dave Stieb (5 1/3 IP, 9 hits, 6 ER, 1 K). Rich Dauer followed Bumbry with a RBI single into left field.
Baltimore (31-15) seized control of the contest in the bottom of the 4th inning. Eddie Murray led off by ripping a double into the right field corner. Ken Singleton then went deep for the 5th time this season putting the Orioles up 3-0. One batter later Cal Ripken Jr. matched Singleton with his 13th home run of the year.
Ripken Jr. wasn’t finished. Following a one out single by Gary Roenicke, Ripken Jr. launced his 14th long ball of the season into left field putting Baltimore up 6-0. It marked the end of the evening for Stieb who also suffered from a lack of run support from the Blue Jays offense.
In the bottom of the 7th, the Orioles loaded the bases off Toronto relief pitcher Mark Bomback. Bumbry and Dauer each singled, followed by a walk to Murray. Hoping to not let the game get out of hand, Blue Jays skipper Bobby Cox called upon Joey McLaughlin. Singleton greeted McLaughlin with a RBI single into left field. The next two Baltimore hitters were retired by McLaughlin to end the inning.
The lone Toronto (15-32) bright spot on offense came with one out in the 9th inning. Wayne Nordhagen connected for his 1st home run of ‘82 off McGregor. McGregor would allow two more hits, but he would get Rance Mulliniks to fly out to left field to end the game.
Blue Jays Notes: Toronto has dropped 4 straight games
Orioles Notes: Dauer netted his 4th game winning RBI of the season….Roenicke (7 games) and Dwyer (5 games) each extended hitting streaks….it was the 3rd complete game of the season for McGregor….Baltimore has won 5 games in a row

Saturday, May 29, 1982 - Houston Astros at New York Mets
Ryan Tosses 3-Hit Shutout
New York, NY
Saturday night Nolan Ryan (9 IP, 3 hits, 4 BB, 8 K) returned to where his baseball career began. Ryan returned to his best form tossing a 3-hit shutout at the Mets taking down New York 7-0. The Astros scored late and often to route the Mets.
Mike Scott (5 2/3 IP, 3 hits, 1 ER, 4 BB, 4 K) stood toe-to-toe against Ryan. Unfortunately, New York’s offense didn’t produce any support for Scott in this one.
Houston (24-23) finally broke through against Scott in the top of the 6th inning. Terry Puhl tripled to right center field with one out. Scott then walked Jose Cruz before giving up a sacrifice fly to Phil Garner. After Ray Knight walked, Ed Lynch took over and got the final out of the inning.
In the top of the 7th, the Astros broke the game open. Art Howe and Luis Pujols each singled to begin the inning. Ryan attempted to bunt the runners over, but Mets backstop John Stearns through out Pujols going to second base. With runners now on the corners, Dickie Thon lined a double off the left field wall. Howe scored and Ryan ended up at third base. Lynch ended up in the showers and was replaced by Pat Zachry. He would get Puhl to fly out in shallow center field to Mookie Wilson. Cruz then hit a ball toward the left center field gap. New York (17-31) left fielder George Foster initially broke in on the ball, but then turned into a hasty retreat. The ball was in-and-out of his glove and kicked toward the outfield wall. Ryan and Thon both scored with Cruz ending up at third base with the Astros up 4-0.
The Astros closed out the contest with a 3-run 9th inning. Pujols collected his third hit of the day, a lead off single to left. Ryan was successful bunting Pujols over to second base. Thon then singled with Pujols advancing to third base. Puhl walked against Zachry to load the bases. Zachry then walked to the clubhouse as he was replaced by Randy Jones. Cruz then knocked in both Pujols and Thon with a single to center field. Garner brought in the final run with a ground out to the right side of the infield. With two out and Cruz on second base, Ray Knight singled to left. Cruz challenged the arm of Foster in left field. Foster’s throw was on target and nailed Cruz at the plate.
Ryan was in command from start to finish. Even though the Mets left nine base runners (five in scoring position), they never really had a big threat going against Ryan.
Astros Notes: the victory snapped a 3-game losing skid….Garner was credited with his 4th game winning RBI of ‘82….it was the 4th complete game and 2nd shutout of the season for Ryan….Puhl recorded 8 putouts in centerfield tonight
Mets Notes: both Kingman and Foster had 5 game hitting streaks snapped….in 3 1/3 innings the New York bullpen allowed 6 runs (4 ER) on 7 hits

Saturday, May 29, 1982 - Kansas City Royals at Texas Rangers
Unlikely Duo Fuels Kansas City Win
Arlington, TX
Manager Dick Howser put out a most interesting lineup on Saturday evening. Two backup outfielders, one outfielder playing a different position, a backup catcher, and two reserve infielders. The final result was positive, an 8-6 win over Texas. Besides the lineup, the offense would be directed by two reserves who drove in all eight Royals runs. Starter Larry Gura (8 IP, 10 hits, 6 runs, 4 ER, 4 K) would benefit from the offensive support earning his 5th win of the season with a little help from a usual face out of the bullpen.
Kansas City (23-23) took the lead for good in the 2nd inning. The bases were empty with two out when Don Slaught, Onix Concepcion and Steve Hammond each singled to load the bases. It was the first of three bases loaded occasions in the game for the Royals. Cesar Geronimo then cleared the bases with a double to left center putting K.C. up 3-0.
In the bottom of the 2nd, Texas (13-31) responded with a little help from the Royals. George Wright led off by reaching on an error by Concepcion at shortstop. Larry Parrish then lined a single into center field, moving Wright to third base. After Leon Roberts struck out, Doug Flynn hit a bouncer to the right side. Kansas City got the force at second base but Flynn beat the relay throw to first base as Wright scored.
A rerun of their 2nd inning happened for the Royals in the 3rd inning. Again the bases were empty with two out when three consecutive singles (Jamie Quirk, Jerry Martin and Slaught) loaded the bases. Rangers starter Doc Medich (4 1/3 IP, 12 hits, 8 ER, 1 BB, 2 K) then walked Concepcion to force in a run. He would get Hammond to ground out to end the K.C. threat.
Texas got a quick response in the bottom of the 3rd. Buddy Bell smacked a solo home run, his 4th of the season to cut the Royals lead to 4-2.
It appeared in the 5th inning that Kansas City would put the game away. Hal McRae and Quirk each singled to begin the inning. Following a Martin strikeout, Slaught singled to load the bases. Concepcion then knocked the cover off the ball and Medich from the game with a bases clearing double. Up 7-2, the Royals now faced John Butcher. Butcher got a Hammond ground out for the second out of the inning. Geronimo then picked up Concepcion with a ground ball single into right field.
Gura and the Kansas City defense struggled in the bottom of the 5th. Bill Sample bounced a lead off single into left field. After Bell fouled out, Jim Sundberg’s double scored Sample. Wright then reached when Gura mishandled a bouncer back to the mound leaving runners on the corners. With Parrish at the plate, Gura broke off a pitch into the dirt that eluded Slaught to the back stop for a wild pitch scoring Sundberg. Parrish would fly out, but Roberts then reached on an error by Quirk at first base. Finally Gura got out of the inning when Flynn flied out to left field.
With a four run lead, Gura entered the bottom of the 7th inning. Wright lined a one out single to center field. Parrish followed with a towering drive down the left field line for his 4th home run of ‘82. Up by a pair of runs, Gura retired the next five Rangers hitters. It should be noted, that there were two very hard hit balls in the 8th.
Royals skipper Dick Howser didn’t hesitate to bring in Dan Quisenberry for the 9th inning. He would surrender a one out single to Sundberg, but he would set down Wright and Parrish to seal the victory for Kansas City. Quisenberry earned his 7th save of the year.
Royals Notes: 3 wins in a row for Kansas City….McRae (7 games) and Martin (5 games) each extended their hitting streaks….K.C. rapped out 16 hits in the contest….Aikens left early in the game injured with Quirk taking over at 1B….the Royals committed 3 errors in the game, they are last in the A.L. in fielding

Saturday, May 29, 1982 - Kansas City Royals at Texas Rangers
At Long Last, Royals Win
Arlington, TX
23 hours and 20 minutes after this game began, Kansas City had a victory under their belt. Suspended by rain until this evening, the Royals wrapped up a 6-1 win playing the final 1 1/2 innings tonight at Arlington Stadium.
The pitching tandem of Vida Blue (7 IP, 2 hits, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 K) and Don Hood (2 IP, 1 BB, 2 K) stifled the Rangers in the contest. Jerry Martin and Hal McRae were the hitting stars for Kansas City.
All the scoring took place on Friday night. In the top of the 2nd inning, Martin provided the punch to get Kansas City (22-23) off on the right foot. Lee May reached with one out when Rangers left fielder Billy Sample boxed a line drive hit directly at him. Martin then stepped in and socked his 5th home run of ‘82 off Rangers starter Frank Tanana (7 1/3 IP, 9 hits, 6 runs, 5 ER, 1 BB, 2 K).
K.C. doubled their advantage in the 4th. May would walk with one out and then chug all the way around to score on a triple to left center by Martin. Willie Aikens then delivered Martin home with a line drive single into right field.
McRae put the Royals up 5-0 in the 6th inning when he led off with his 10th home run of the season.
There were few bright spots offensively for Texas (13-30) in this game. One of the few was when George Wright opened the bottom of the 6th inning by hitting his 5th homer of the campaign.
The Royals wrapped up the scoring in the top of the 8th. Frank White doubled down the left field line leading off. One out later, McRae lined a single to left center chasing White home. Shortly after the rains came.
Following a 1 hour and 34 minute rain delay, play was suspended until Saturday evening. It took all of 20 minutes to wrap this one up.
Royals Notes: McRae extended his hitting streak to 6 games….George Brett saw the conclusion of a 6 game hitting streak, but he was brilliant & busy at third base with 4 putouts and 4 assists….Martin got his 5th game winning RBI of the season
Rangers Notes: Buddy Bell who had the only other hit for Texas has hit in 5 straight….Larry Parrish had his 9 game hitting streak stopped tonight….Texas has dropped 4 consecutive games

Giants Gale Puts Down Pirates
Pittsburgh, PA
It’s been a tough beginning to ‘82 for Rich Gale (7 IP, 7 hits, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K) of the San Francisco Giants. Tonight, Gale was outstanding winning his 3rd game of the season by a final score of 5-1. Gary Lavelle worked an effective final two innings and the Giants offense provided Gale with more than enough runs.
San Francisco (23-25) broke a scoreless game in the top of the 3rd inning. Johnnie LeMaster led off by hitting a bouncer to the right of the pitchers mound. Pirates pitcher Don Robinson (5 IP, 7 hits, 4 runs, 3 ER, 1 BB, 7 K) fielded the ball cleanly. His throw though was off target bouncing down into the right field corner. LeMaster turned on the jets and ended up at third base. After Gale struck out, Joe Morgan walked putting runners on the corners. Chili Davis was next and he bounced a RBI single into center field. With runners still on the corners, Dave Bergman followed with a line drive RBI single to center field. Robinson got out of the inning when he got Jack Clark to bounce into an inning ending 6-4-3 double play.
The Giants doubled the lead in the 4th inning. Milt May lined a one out single into right field. With two out, LeMaster lined a shot into the left field corner for a run scoring double. Gale then helped his own cause by bouncing a RBI single into right field.
Pittsburgh (26-19) got their only run of the contest in the bottom of the 6th. With the bases empty and two out, Dave Parker smacked his 1st home run of ‘82.
Dave Bergman answered the Parker home run in the top of the 7th inning against the Pirates Randy Niemann. Again with two out and the bases empty, Bergman this time homered for the 3rd time this season.
Lavelle was great in relief as he struck out four Pirates to preserve an easy Giants victory.
Giants Notes: Davis earned his 3rd game winning RBI of the season….LeMaster left the game after being struck in the face by a ground ball
Pirates Notes: Bill Madlock went 3-for-4 this evening for the Bucs

Saturday, May 29, 1982 - Detroit Tigers at Oakland A’s
Detroit Dominates A’s
Oakland, CA
This game was over by the end of the 1st inning. Detroit blitzed Oakland for a 4-spot in the top of the 1st inning on their way to an easy 7-2 win. Jerry Ujdur (9 IP, 4 hits, 2 ER, 5 BB, 3 K) did an outstanding job for the Tigers as he won for the 3rd time this season.
The assault on the A’s began when Lou Whitaker and Kirk Gibson each walked to begin the game off Oakland starter Steve McCatty (2 IP, 7 hits, 5 ER, 2 BB, 1 K). The best hitter in baseball, Larry Herndon then reached on an infield single. Lance Parrish kept the line moving with a 2-run single. Richie Hebner would reload the bases with a line drive single into right field. The hot hitting Howard Johnson would get Herndon home with a sacrifice fly to center field. Batting with two out, Alan Trammell lined a RBI single to center field to score Parrish putting Detroit up 4-0.
Tony Armas got the A’s a little closer in the bottom of the 2nd inning. With one out, Armas lifted his 6th home run of the season over the left field fence.
Detroit (30-16) answered back in the top of the 3rd inning. Richie Hebner lined a shot to deep center field. A’s center fielder Dwayne Murphy went back on the ball crashing into the fence as the ball bounded away. Hebner set up shop at third base with a triple and Murphy left the contest shaken up. Johnson then KO’d McCatty with a RBI single into right field.
In the bottom of the 3rd, it was time for Oakland (23-25) to respond. Rickey Henderson walked with two out. He would then swipe second base, his 31st stolen base on the season. Wayne Gross then pounded a shot off the right field wall for a RBI double.
Then the runs dried up. The A’s Bob Owchinko (6 IP, 3 hits, 1 ER, 2 BB, 6 K) nothing short of sensational for Oakland.
Taking the game into the 9th inning, Owchinko would allow a lead off single to Whitaker. A’s manager Billy Martin turned to Dave Beard in an attempt to keep it a 3-run deficit. Beard retired the first two hitters, but couldn’t get the third out of the inning. Lance Parrish walloped his 9th home run of ‘82 to account for the final runs of the game.
Tigers Notes: Parrish now has 6 game winning RBI….Herndon (12 games) and Johnson (11 games) both extended hitting streaks….Ujdur pitched his 1st complete game of the season, the 15th of the year for the Detroit staff….Detroit has won 3 consecutive games
A’s Notes: all 4 hits that Oakland got today were extra base hits….the A’s have dropped 3 in a row

Saturday, May 29, 1982 - Milwaukee Brewers at California Angels
Late Inning Thrills for Angels
Anaheim, CA
They have won two games in this series thus far. On Saturday afternoon, California followed a similar script to their previous win. Scoring four runs over the final three innings the Angels took down the Brewers 5-4 in 10 innings.
The red hot Robin Yount (4-for-5 today) got Milwaukee (30-16) going today in the 1st inning. Yount took Angels starter Ken Forsch’s (4 IP, 6 hits, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K) pitch over the right field fence for his 13th home run of the season.
Reggie Jackson helped the Angels come back to tie the contest in the bottom of the 2nd. Jackson opened the inning with a triple to right center off Brewers starter Randy Lerch (7 IP, 4 hits, 2 runs, 1 ER, 5 BB). Don Baylor got Jackson home next when he lined a RBI single into left field.
In the top of the 5th, the Brewers recaptured the lead and Forsch left the game. Paul Molitor opened up by walking and then stealing second base. Forsch left with a back problem and Bruce Kison came in for California (26-22). Yount brought Molitor in with a line drive to right field for a single.
It appeared that Milwaukee may have put the game away in the top of the 8th inning. Don Money doubled leading off against Kison. The Brewers brought in Marshall Edwards as a pinch runner. His speed wasn’t needed as Ben Oglivie slammed his major league leading 16th home run of ‘82 to put the Brewers up 4-1.
California didn’t roll over though. Lerch walked Ron Jackson leading off the 8th and was replaced by Rollie Fingers. Fingers working on short rest struggled today. Brian Downing greeted Fingers with a single to center field. Doug DeCinces was next and he bounced a ball toward Milwaukee second baseman Jim Gantner. Gantner’s throw was off line and sailed into the first base dugout. Jackson scored and the other runners ended up at second and third. Reggie Jackson then whiffed. Baylor then hit a soft grounder toward third base. Molitor only had a play at first base and Downing scored cutting the Brewers lead to 4-3.
Fingers working now on fumes, ran out of gas in the 9th. With one out he allowed singles to pinch hitter Fred Lynn and Tim Foli. Jerry Augustine came in for Milwaukee and walked Ron Jackson to load the bases. Needing two outs, the Brewers then turned to Dwight Bernard. Downing would welcome him to the contest by lifting a game tying sacrifice fly into left field to score Lynn.
Milwaukee threatened in the top of the 10th inning against the Angels Luis Sanchez. Ted Simmons led off with a double. The Brewers brought in Ned Yost to pinch run. Yost would advance to third base on a tapper to the right side by Edwards. With the infield drawn in Oglivie bounced to DeCinces. Yost held at third base, setting the two out stage for Gorman Thomas. Sanchez blew a third strike past Thomas to preserve the tie game.
Bernard got Reggie Jackson leading off the 10th on a fly ball to left. Then things went south for him. He walked Baylor, who then stole second base. Bobby Grich then bounced a single into left field to score Baylor and win the game for California.
Brewers Notes: the pitching staff walked 7 hitters today and only recorded 1 strikeout….Thomas struck out 4 times this afternoon
Angels Notes: Grich earned his 4th game winning RBI of the season….DeCinces saw his 6 game hitting streak end today….California left a runner on 3rd base in both the 8th and 9th innings

Saturday, May 29, 1982 - Atlanta Braves at Philadelphia Phillies
Another Atlanta Comeback
Philadelphia, PA
This game had a little bit of everything. One of those little bits was another comeback win by Atlanta. Just like last night, the Braves scored late to pull out a 3-2 win over Philadelphia.
Braves starter Rick Mahler was forced to leave one batter into the 2nd inning. The Phillies Mike Schmidt hit a line drive back at Mahler. Mahler, turning to protect himself had the ball careen off of him to second baseman Glenn Hubbard for an out. Mahler left for precautionary reasons.
Atlanta took a 1-0 lead in the top of the 3rd. Jerry Royster singled with one out off Phillies starter Mike Krukow (6 IP, 6 hits, 1 ER, 3 BB, 6 K) and then swiped second base. Royster would advance to third base on a ground ball by Rafael Ramirez. Now with two out, Chris Chambliss brought Royster home with a line drive single into center field.
In the bottom of the frame, Philadelphia (25-22) was feeling frustrated and they let it out. By the end of the 3rd, the Phillies had already hit into 4 line drive outs. In the 1st inning, Manny Trillo lined into a double play with the hit-and-run on. Then there was the Schmidt liner in the 2nd. Ivan DeJesus led off the 3rd inning with a single. Attempting to steal second base, DeJesus was called out by umpire Joe Crawford. DeJesus didn’t agree, voiced his displeasure and was then tossed from the game.
The Braves took a 1-0 advantage into the bottom of the 6th inning. Joe Cowley (3 2/3 IP, 4 hits, 2 ER, 1 BB, 1 K) who came in for Mahler got into early trouble in the inning. Pinch hitter Greg Gross led off with a single into right. Cowley then walked Pete Rose and would be removed for reliever Steve Bedrosian. A Trillo grounder moved the runners to second and third. Following a strikeout by Gary Matthews, it was up to Schmidt to pick up his team. And pick it up he did with a 2-run single into center field.
Atlanta (28-18) wasted no time getting right back into the game in the top of the 7th. With the bases empty and two out, Chambliss slugged his 10th home run of the season to knot the score at 2-2.
Closer Ron Reed came in for the Phillies to keep the game even in the top of the 9th inning. The Philadelphia plan didn’t work out. Glenn Hubbard led off by lining a shot into the right field corner for a double. Pinch hitter Brett Butler flied out meekly to center field. Royster then became the hero when he also lined a double into the right field corner to plate Hubbard and give the Braves a 3-2 lead.
Braves closer Gene Garber then worked a 1-2-3 bottom of the 9th inning to earn his 13th save of ‘82.
Braves Notes: Chambliss’ big day extended his hitting streak to 6 games….Ramirez had his 6 game hitting streak snapped this afternoon….Atlanta has won 4 consecutive games
Phillies Notes: Schmidt stretched his hitting streak to 10 games with his 2-run single….Garry Maddox also extended his hitting streak to 5 games….Trillo saw the end of a 6 game hit streak….for the game Philadelphia lined out 5 times….the Phillies have dropped 3 straight

Saturday, May 29, 1982 - Los Angeles Dodgers at Chicago Cubs
Martz, Cubs Slow Down L.A.
Chicago, IL
They have come up short in the first four meetings of the season versus Los Angeles. Today was different as the Chicago Cubs got by the Dodgers 4-2. Randy Martz (7 IP, 5 hits, 2 runs, 1 ER, 2 BB) delivered an excellent outing and won his 1st game of ‘82. Young closer Lee Smith worked the final two innings to earn his 8th save of the season.
Los Angeles (35-13) struck first with a single tally in the 2nd inning. Rick Monday walked with one out. Bill Russell then lined a shot into the right field corner. Monday raced home from first base as Russell settled in with a run scoring double.
There was no quit in the Cubs though on this day. In the bottom of the 4th they took their first lead of the day. With one out, Bill Buckner lined a double into the right field corner. It was a bonus at-bat for Buckner as just two pitches before he delivered the hit, Dodgers third baseman Ron Cey dropped Buckner’s foul pop. Leon Durham then stepped in against Los Angeles starter Bob Welch (6 IP, 5 hits, 3 runs, 2 ER, 3 BB, 5 K). Durham delivered a go ahead two run home run, his 9th long ball of the campaign.
Martz held the Dodgers at bay until the 6th. Ron Roenicke led off with a double off the right field wall. Martz then got Steve Garvey and Pedro Guerrero to ground out. With Roenicke now on third base, it appeared Martz would get a third ground out. Cey bounced a ball toward second that second baseman Bump Wills had to range to his right on. After a back handed scoop, Wills’ throw sailed wide of first base and into the dugout. Roenicke scored on the play and the contest was even at 2-2.
Chicago (21-26) would waste no time in regaining the lead. Buckner lined a one out single into center field. Durham then walked, setting up teammate Jody Davis. Davis bounced a ball into center field. Buckner challenged the throwing arm of center fielder Ron Roenicke and won the race home.
Taking a 3-2 lead into the bottom of the 8th inning, the Cubs tacked on an insurance run. Ryne Sandberg lined a shot into the right field corner off Dodgers reliever Vicente Romo. L.A. then brought in lefty Terry Forster to face Buckner and Durham. Buckner walked and Durham reached on an infield single to load the bases. Righty Tom Niedenfuer then was called upon to face a bases loaded, nobody out situation. He would strikeout Davis for the first out of the inning. Keith Moreland then lifted a fly ball deep enough into center field to bring Buckner home.
Smith would allow a two out base runner in both the 8th and 9th innings, but each time he would get the third out of the inning.
Dodgers Notes: L.A. used 4 pitchers in the 8th inning….of their 5 hits, the Dodgers had 4 doubles this afternoon
Cubs Notes: after a much injured early part of the season, Martz attained his 1st win of ‘82 today….Buckner & Durham were on base 7 times in their 8 total plate appearances

Saturday, May 29, 1982 - New York Yankees at Minnesota Twins
Yankees Take Advantage of Opportunities
Minneapolis, MN
On this afternoon, opportunities were abundant at the Metrodome. New York rapped out 14 hits and drew 5 walks, yet they stranded 14 base runners. Minnesota had just 6 hits but were given 9 free passes, yet they stranded 10 base runners. At the end of the day, the Yankees cashed in a few more times as they took down the Twins 4-1. Neither starter, Dave Righetti (6 2/3 IP, 5 hits, 1 ER, 7 BB, 5 K) for the Yankees nor Brad Havens (5 2/3 IP, 10 hits, 4 ER, 3 BB, 4 K) were particularly sharp. Because of the run support though, Righetti did get his 7th win of ‘82.
New York (29-17) put up a 2-spot in the top of the 2nd inning. After hitting the ball hard in the opening frame, the Yankees got balls to drop onto open turf in this inning. Dave Winfield walked to lead off. Rick Cerone followed with a line drive single into left field. Roy Smalley and Graig Nettles then each collected a RBI single to put New York on top.
Nettles would add to the Yankees lead in the top of the 4th inning when he led off with his 12th home run of the season to right field.
Minnesota (14-35) knotched their sole tally in the bottom of the 4th. With two out, Jesus Vega slugged his 3rd home run of ‘82.
Winfield topped off the scoring in the 5th inning when his one out home run put New York up by three runs again. The blast was Winfield’s 9th home run of the year.
Goose Gossage got out of a first and second jam in the bottom of the 8th inning. He then got Ron Washington to hit into a game ending double play in the 9th as he earned his 8th save of the season.

Sutcliffe Stops White Sox, Cleveland Bats Erupt
Cleveland, OH
Game two of today’s doubleheader was a reversal of roles from game one. Cleveland’s bats did most of the talking and starter Rick Sutcliffe (9 IP, 7 hits, 3 runs, 1 ER, 2 BB, 9 K) sparkled again winning his 7th game in eight decisions. At the end, Cleveland took a 9-3 decision from the White Sox.
Cleveland (23-22) took an early 1-0 advantage in the bottom of the 1st inning. Rick Manning began a 5-for-5, 3 RBI game with a single into center field. Alan Bannister then ripped a RBI double into the left field corner to begin a 4 RBI game for himself off Chicago starter Britt Burns (1 IP, 7 hits, 6 runs, 5 ER, 1 K).
The White Sox responded by tying the game in the top of the 2nd. Carlton Fisk lined a single into left field leading off. Fisk then advanced to third base on a single up the middle by Mike Squires. Tony Bernazard’s fielders choice grounder got Fisk home.
In the bottom of the 2nd inning, Burns imploded and the Cleveland bats exploded. Chris Bando opened the inning with a single to center. Mike Hargrove who went 4-for-4 then bounced a single into right field. A come backer to the mound by Dybzinski was misplayed by Burns resulting in the bases being loaded. Manning then bounced a 2-run single into right field. Bannister then bounced Burns from the contest with a 3-run home run, his 3rd of ‘82. Steve Trout entered the contest for the White Sox and got rocked. Toby Harrah lined a double into the left field corner. After striking out Andre Thornton, Trout allowed a run scoring double to Von Hayes putting Cleveland up 7-1.
Cleveland closed out their scoring for the game in the bottom of the 3rd. Hargrove bounced a lead off single into left field. After Dybzinski struck out, Manning’s double to left center scored Hargrove. With two out, Harrah chased Manning home with a triple into left center field off Trout.
Chicago (21-23) scratched two runs off Sutcliffe in the top of the 9th inning. Squires tripled with two out. A Dybzinski error on a grounder by Bernazard allowed Squires to score. With Bernazard on second base, Aurelio Rodriguez singled to left field to plate Bernazard. Sutcliffe then got Ron LeFlore to ground out to end the game and get Cleveland a split of the doubleheader.
White Sox Notes: Fisk extended his hitting streak to 6 games….the Chicago pitching staff was blistered for 17 hits….Greg Luzinski and Harold Baines each struck out 3 times against Sutcliffe
Indians Notes: Sutcliffe tossed his 5th complete game of ‘82….Harrah extended his hitting streak to 10 consecutive games….Cleveland outfielders only had 1 putout in the contest

White Sox Win Gift Wrapped
Cleveland, OH
Saturday afternoon Chicago received a big gift from Cleveland in game one of their doubleheader. Aided by four Cleveland errors, the White Sox knocked off the home team 7-4.
Chicago (21-22) went up 1-0 in the 1st inning off Cleveland starter Eddie Whitson (4 2/3 IP, 4 hits, 2 ER, 4 BB, 1 K). Vance Law doubled with two out. Clean up hitter Greg Luzinski then slugged a double of his own to bring Law home.
The quiet offensive game began to come alive in the bottom of the 4th inning. Toby Harrah doubled with one out against White Sox hurler Dennis Lamp (6 1/3 IP, 7 hits, 4 runs, 3 ER, 2 K). Andre Thornton followed with a shot into the left field corner to score Harrah and tie the game at 1-1.
The White Sox answered right back in the top of the 5th. Tony Bernazard was on first base with two outs when Vance Law walked. Cleveland manager brought in Bud Anderson to take over for Whitson. Luzinski welcomed Anderson to the contest with a RBI line drive single into center field.
Cleveland (22-22) responded in the bottom of the frame. Ron Hassey bounced a lead off single into left field. With one out, Jerry Dybzinski shot the left center field gap with a RBI double.
In the top of the 6th, disaster struck Cleveland. Steve Kemp and Harold Baines each walked to begin the inning. Bill Almon bounced a RBI single into left field to score Kemp. Marc Hill then grounded into a 6-4-3 double play and it appeared that Anderson was on the verge of getting out of trouble. With two outs and a runner on third, Rudy Law bounced what appeared to be a harmless grounder toward Mike Hargrove at first base. The ball went through Hargrove into right field for a 2-base error and Baines scored. Bernazard then hit a grounder that eluded shortstop Jerry Dybzinski. Rudy Law scored on the play. Vance Law was the next hitter. He hit a pop foul ball behind the plate. Catcher Ron Hassey dropped the ball giving another shot to Law. Law lined a single to center field. Center fielder Rick Manning bobbled the ball allowing Bernazard to score and Law ended up at second base. Law then scored when Luzinski lined a RBI single into center field. Four errors and five runs later the White Sox led 7-2.
Chicago would return the gifting to Cleveland, but were not as generous in their offering. Hassey reached on a one out error by shortstop Bill Almon. Jack Perconte then soared a liner over the head of center fielder Rudy Law for a RBI double. Lamp depart and Chico Escarrega entered the game for the White Sox. Dybzinski bounced a single into left field to score Fischlin. Escarrega escaped further damage when he got Manning to hit into an inning ending double play.
The final two innings were uneventful as Chicago grabbed game one of the doubleheader.
White Sox Notes: Rudy Law (6 games) and Almon (5 games) both extended personal hitting streaks….Chicago turned 2 double plays in the game….Tom Paciorek’s 7-game hitting streak came to an end
Indians Notes: Cleveland’s 4 errors came during 3 consecutive hitters….the defense turned 4 double plays in the contest

Saturday, May 29, 1982 - Cincinnati Reds at Montreal Expos
Soto: Simply Sensational
Montreal, Quebec
This game was not going to get away from Mario Soto (9 IP, 7 hits, 1 ER, 2 BB, 11 K). He was going to finish what he started. He was going to win this game. Win he did, as the Reds defeated the Expos on Saturday afternoon at Olympic Stadium 2-1.
The tough luck loss went to the Expos Bill Gullickson (8 IP, 8 hits, 2 ER, 4 BB, 5 K). On most days he would have won the game. On this day, Montreal (24-22) was unable to support his fine pitching performance with enough runs.
Cincinnati (13-31) took an early 1-0 lead in the 2nd inning. With one out, Cesar Cedeno lined a double into the right field corner. Larry Biittner followed by lining a RBI single into right field.
Biittner came up big again in the 4th. Dan Driessen lined a lead off single into center field. Dave Concepcion would hit a shot over third baseman Tim Wallach into the left field corner. Driessen was held at third base as Concepcion strolled into second base with a double. After Cedeno fanned, Biittner’s chopper to the right side scored Driessen.
Like last night, the Expos offense didn’t generate any runs until the 8th inning. Pinch hitter John Milner lead off with a walk. With one out, Jerry White singled up the middle moving Milner to second base. Al Oliver then scorched a liner down the right field foul line. Milner scored, White ended up at third base on the double by Oliver. Soto was not going to be denied on this day. He then fanned Gary Carter and got Tim Wallach to bounce out to end the Montreal threat.
In the 9th, Soto walked Speier with one out. He would then strikeout Mike Gates and get pinch hitter Brad Mills to ground out to end the game.
Reds Notes: Soto tossed his 3rd complete game of ‘82….Cincinnati stranded 12 base runners, 8 in scoring position
Expos Notes: the loss snapped a 3 game winning streak….Raines, Carter and Wallach combined to go 0-for-12 with 7 strikeouts….Cromartie and Dawson left in the 7th inning after colliding in the outfield on a play

Friday, May 28, 1982 - Boston Red Sox at Seattle Mariners
Mariners Get the Shutout This Time
Seattle, WA
Last night the Red Sox won by a shutout. Tonight, Boston (29-17) was on the other end of a shutout as Seattle took them down 3-0. Jim Beattie (9 IP, 6 hits, 3 K) was brilliant this evening for the Mariners as he won his 4th game of the season.
Seattle had chances in each of the first three innings, but they would leave five runners on base.
A scoreless game changed in the bottom of the 7th inning in favor of Seattle (18-31). Gary Gray began the inning by hitting his 4th home run of the season off Red Sox starter Mike Torrez (6 1/3 IP, 4 hits, 2 ER, 2 BB, 5 K). After striking out Jim Essian, Torrez gave up a triple to Todd Cruz. Cruz crushed the ball over the head of Boston center fielder Rick Miller. Luis Aponte was brought in by Red Sox skipper Ralph Houk. He would fan Dave Henderson for the second out of the inning. The third out of the inning was hard to come by for Aponte. Julio Cruz lined a RBI single to center field to score Todd Cruz. Manny Castillo followed with a line drive single into center field moving Julio Cruz to second base. Bruce Bochte then bounced a RBI single into right field.
Beattie would carry a 2-hitter into the final three innings of the game. Yielding four hits over the final three frames, Boston would strand three runners in scoring position during that time against Beattie.

Friday, May 28, 1982 - Detroit Tigers at Oakland A’s
Tigers Roll, Morris Stays Unbeaten
Oakland, CA
It took a bit for Detroit (29-16) to get going on Friday evening in Oakland. Having to dig out of a 3-run hole, the Tigers went on to easily defeat the A’s 8-3. Jack Morris (9 IP, 7 hits, 3 ER, 4 BB, 3 K) won his 8th game of the season without a loss.
Oakland (23-24) struck for two runs in the bottom of the 1st. Rickey Henderson walked leading off and the stole his 30th base of ‘82. Wayne Gross lined a single to center field to score Henderson and put the A’s up 1-0. A slow grounder to third base moved Gross to second base. He moved to third base on a single by Dwayne Murphy. Dan Meyer’s grounder which turned into a force out scored Gross.
The combination of Henderson/Gross strikes again in the bottom of the 3rd inning. Henderson lined a single to center field leading off. Gross then lined a shot into the right field corner for a RBI double.
Detroit would break through against A’s starter Matt Keough (4 2/3 IP, 9 hits, 5 ER, 3 BB) in the top of the 4th. Chet Lemon and Howard Johnson hit back-to-back doubles to put the Tigers on the scoreboard.
In the top of the 5th inning, the Tigers took control of the game knocking Keough from the contest. A seven batter flurry came with two outs and the bases empty. Lance Parrish’s towering drive to left field just eluded the glove of Henderson as it crept over the fence. It was the 8th home run of ‘82 for Parrish. Back-to-back doubles by Glenn Wilson and Lemon put the second run of the inning on the board. Johnson then singled Lemon to third base and Alan Trammell walked to load the bases. Keough was done and Brian Kingman entered the game. Home plate was moving on Kingman as he walked Enos Cabell and Lou Whitaker consecutively with the bases loaded. The free gifts put Detroit up 5-3.
Two more tallies in the 7th inning off Kingman all but put the game away for Detroit. Lemon and Johnson went back-to-back again with singles. Kingman almost got out of the inning. He got consecutive pop ups from Trammell and Cabell. The inning stayed alive when Whitaker reached on an infield single to load the bases. A’s manager Billy Martin stuck with Kingman and the decision back fired. Kirk Gibson ripped a 2-run double into the right field corner putting the Tigers up 7-3.
Once again it was Lemon and Johnson with back-to-back doubles in the top of the 8th inning to put Detroit up 8-3.
Over the final six frames, Morris allowed only two harmless hits. He did walk three hitters in the 9th inning before striking out Henderson to end the game.
Tigers Notes: Herndon (11 games) and Johnson (10 games) each extended hitting streaks….Trammell saw a 7 game hitting streak end tonight….it was the 5th complete game of the season for Morris….Lemon & Johnson combined to go 9-for-10 with 5 doubles, 3 RBI and 6 runs scored….Detroit stranded 14 base runners in the game
A’s Notes: the pitching staff got shredded for 16 hits and 7 walks tonight….Dan Meyer had his 7 game hitting streak halted this evening

Friday, May 28, 1982 - Milwaukee Brewers at California Angels
Milwaukee Goes Long Distance in Victory
Anaheim, CA
Pete Vuckovich (7 1/3 IP, 5 hits, 2 ER, 2 BB) and Rollie Fingers (1 2/3 IP, 2 BB, 1 K) shut down the California offense. Cecil Cooper and Ben Oglivie played long ball to support their pitchers and give the Brewers a 4-2 win on Friday night.
Cooper got things started for Milwaukee (30-15) in the top of the 1st inning. Batting with the bases empty and two out, Cooper connected off Angels starter Geoff Zahn (9 IP, 9 hits, 4 ER, 1 BB, 3 K) for his 15th home run of the season.
It stayed 1-0 in favor of the Brewers until the bottom of the 5th inning. Don Baylor led off with a double to left center. Bobby Grich wasted no time driving in Baylor with a RBI single to center. Grich went to second base on a grounder by Tim Foli. He would then come home on a single by Joe Ferguson.
With California (25-22) now leading 2-1, the Brewers began their comeback in the 6th. Robin Yount led off with a double. After Cooper bounced out moving Yount to third base, Zahn hit Ted Simmons with a pitch. Gorman Thomas then topped a ball out in front of the plate. Yount raced home as Angels catcher Joe Ferguson threw Thomas out at first base.
Now tied 2-2, Milwaukee dialed long distance once again. Ben Oglivie led off the 7th inning with his 14th home run of the season putting the Brewers up 3-2.
Vuckovich tired in the bottom of the 8th and Fingers came in to slam the door on the Angels. With two runners on and one out for the Angels, Fingers fanned Reggie Jackson and he got Doug DeCinces to ground out.
Oglivie was back at it again as he led off the 9th inning with his 15th home run of the season.
In the bottom of the 9th, Fingers walked Grich. He would then set down Tim Foli and Bob Boone to secure the win for Milwaukee. Fingers recorded his 13th save of the season.

Friday, May 28, 1982 - New York Yankees at Minnesota Twins
Guidry Silences Twins Bats, Yankees Offense Blisters Twins Pitching
Minneapolis, MN
The combination of excellent pitching and timely hitting led New York to an easy 8-1 win over Minnesota on Friday evening at the Metrodome. Yankees starter Ron Guidry (9 IP, 3 hits, 1 ER, 5 BB, 6 K) went the distance tossing a 3-hitter. New York’s offense would explode late to leave no doubt which team would win this game.
New York (28-17) went up 1-0 in the 3rd inning, powered by two extra base hits. Dave Collins led off by smacking a double off the left field wall. With two out, Jerry Mumphrey laced a triple to right center off Twins starter Al Williams (6 2/3 IP, 6 hits, 3 ER, 4 BB, 2 K). It was the 10th triple of the season for Mumphrey.
Williams ran into problems in the top of the 4th inning. He would yield singles to Dave Winfield and Butch Wynegar. Then he would load the bases when he walked Roy Smalley. The Twins brought the infield in against Collins. Williams got Collins to hit into a force play at the plate. Williams got the second out when Graig Nettles flied out to shallow center field. With two out and the bases still loaded, the Yankees got a clutch 2-run single off the bat of Andre Robertson.
The Yankees carried a 3-0 lead into the 8th inning. Against relief pitcher Terry Felton, New York went off for five runs. A walk to Wynegar, a single by Smalley and another walk to Collins loaded the bases. Nettles then bounced a 2-run single into right field. Felton then set down Robertson on a force play and got Mumphrey to fly out. New York had runners on the corners when Ken Griffey connected for his 8th home run of the season down the right field line.
Minnesota (14-34) scored their lone run in the bottom of the 9th inning. Gary Gaetti led off with his 10th home run of the season. He was able to keep the ball just inside the foul pole in left field. The Twins Jesus Vega then reached on an error. Unfazed, Guidry got Boomer Wells to hit into a double play and he got Larry Milbourne to bounce out to end the game.
Yankees Notes: Mumphrey has hit in 5 straight games and has 4 game winning RBI in ‘82….Guidry tossed his 3rd complete game of the season….New York has won 5 consecutive games
Twins Notes: former Minnesota players Butch Wynegar and Roy Smalley reached base 6 times in 10 opportunities and scored 4 runs tonight

Friday, May 28, 1982 - San Diego Padres at St. Louis Cardinals
At Long Last, Padres Prevail
St. Louis, MO
Pitching was the highlight on Friday evening at Busch Memorial Stadium. The match up of Tim Lollar (7 IP, 4 hits, 2 ER, 3 BB, 9 K) versus Joaquin Andujar (7 IP, 6 hits, 2 ER, 1 BB, 3 K) lived up to the pregame hype. As the hitting struggled and runs became hard to come by, the innings piled up. After 14 long innings, 3 hours and 27 minutes of baseball, the Padres came out on top 4-3.
The Cardinals struck first in the game with a 2-run 2nd inning. Gene Tenace walked leading off the inning and then went to second base when Mike Ramsey blooped a single into center field. Tommy Herr then lined a shot to left center. The double cleared the bases putting St. Louis (25-19) on top.
In the top of the 3rd inning, former Cardinal Garry Templeton helped get the Padres on the board. Leading off, Templeton lined a ball to right center. After a couple of big hops the ball rolled to the base of the fence. Templeton raced to third base with a lead off triple. Lollar then contributed to his own cause with a sacrifice fly.
San Diego (17-29) would tie the game in the top of the 6th inning. Again Lollar contributed to his own support when he led off with a walk. After Gene Richards flied out, Tim Flannery’s shot to left center field went for a RBI double.
Both teams would have long stretches of a lack of hitting. San Diego went from the 7th inning until the 12th inning before collecting hits. St. Louis struggled even more as they managed only one hit between the 3rd inning and the 10th inning.
In the bottom of the 11th, the Cardinals threatened to win the contest. Keith Hernandez led off with an infield single and would advance to third base on consecutive ground ball outs. Darrell Porter would pop out to end the threat.
The Padres seized their first lead of the game in the top of the 12th inning. Luis Salazar singled leading off against the Cardinals Jeff Lahti. Salazar then swiped second base and advanced on a throwing error by Porter. Terry Kennedy would bounce back to the pitcher for the first out of the inning. Lahti then walked Sixto Lezcano to put runners on the corners. Jim Kaat then came in to replace Lahti. Pinch hitter Kurt Bevacqua would greet Kaat with a RBI single into center field scoring Salazar. Kaat would manage to get the next two hitters to ground out to end the Padres uprising.
With victory only three outs away, San Diego could not close out the game. Pinch hitter Tito Landrum and Herr each singled to begin the inning against Dave Dravecky. Pitcher Bob Forsch came in to pinch hit and put down a perfect sacrifice bunt. Luis DeLeon was summoned from the bullpen for the Padres. Lonnie Smith then tied the game with a sacrifice fly to center field. DeLeon would end the inning by getting Ozzie Smith to fly out. The game moved on now tied 3-3.
St. Louis would get Keith Hernandez on with a lead off single in the bottom of the 13th against Gary Lucas. Lucas then got George Hendrick to bounce into a double play and he got Willie McGee on a grounder to end the inning.
Luis Salazar would begin the winning rally for the Padres in the top of the 14th inning off Cardinals closer Bruce Sutter. Salazar led off with a line drive single into left field and he would steal second base yet again. Following a Terry Kennedy strikeout, Lezcano ripped a double to left center field to score Salazar. Sutter would fan the next two hitters, but the damage was done.
Like the bottom of the 13th, the Cardinals got a lead off single by Darell Porter off Lucas. Also like the 13th, the next hitter Julio Gonzalez would hit into a double play. Herr then bounced out to third base to end the game.
Game Note: the two teams combined to use 40 players (Padres 20 and Cardinals 20) in this evenings game
Padres Notes: it was the 6th game winning RBI of the season for Lezcano….Lollar (9 games) and Richards (5 games) each had hitting streaks stopped tonight….Flannery was busy at second base this evening with 11 total chances and taking part in 3 double plays….Eric Show pitched 3 shutout innings in the game
Cardinals Notes: Doug Bair pitched 3 perfect innings in relief….Ozzie Smith had 12 chances at shortstop (6 putouts, 6 assists)….also in the field this evening, Hernandez 16 putouts at 1B and Herr 9 assists at 2B

Friday, May 28, 1982 - Atlanta Braves at Philadelphia Phillies
Late Offense Leads Braves to Win
Philadelphia, PA
Two future hall of famers both struggled on Friday night at Veterans Stadium. Atlanta’s Phil Niekro (6 1/3 IP, 7 hits, 4 ER, 3 BB, 3 K) had one bad inning that did him in. Philadelphia’s Steve Carlton (7 1/3 IP, 6 hits, 8 runs, 4 ER, 6 BB, 6 K) had numerous run ins with trouble and a defensive break down that did him in. When all was said and done, the Braves defeated the Phillies 10-5 in the contest.
Atlanta struck first with a single tally in the top of the 2nd inning. Carlton walked Claudell Washington with one out. Washington then swiped second base before scoring on a RBI single by Terry Harper.
The Braves went up 2-0 in the 3rd inning. This time Carlton walked Niekro leading off. A one out walk to Rafael Ramirez moved Niekro to second base. Chris Chambliss then bounced a single into left field to score Niekro.
With heat in the 90’s, Niekro was seemingly fatigued after running the bases and his pitching suffered in the bottom of the 3rd. Niekro walked Pete Rose leading off. With one away, Gary Matthews lined a single into center field. Mike Schmidt then connected for his 9th home run of the season to put the Phillies up 3-2. A two out walk to Garry Maddox kept the inning alive for Philadelphia (25-21). George Vukovich then hit a rocket off the right field wall for a RBI double.
In the top of the 4th inning, Atlanta (27-18) continued to peck away at Carlton. Glenn Hubbard singled with one out, then Bruce Benedict walked and Niekro singled into right field to load the bases. Jerry Royster got Hubbard home with a sacrifice fly to center field. Carlton wriggled out of the jam when he got Ramirez to ground out.
Down by a run in the 6th, Bruce Benedict with one swing of the bat tied the game for Atlanta. Benedict stepped in with the bases empty and two out when he hit his 3rd home run of ‘82.
A 4-4 game moved to the 8th inning. Then, the unexpected happened and the Braves were propelled to victory. Carlton hit Washington with a pitch to begin the nightmare. Harper then walked putting two men on base. Hubbard attempting to sacrifice would reach when third baseman Mike Schmidt mishandled the ball leaving the bases loaded. Hoping to bear down and get out of the inning, Carlton then got Benedict to pop out on the infield. Atlanta pinch hitter Bob Watson faced Carlton with the infield drawn in and one out. Watson topped a ground ball toward Ivan DeJesus at short. DeJesus’ throw to the plate was late in an attempt to force out Washington. The Braves were now up 5-4 and Carlton was off to the shower. Jerry Reed came in and struck out Royster for the second out of the inning. Reed didn’t fare as well against the next three Braves hitters. Ramirez bounced a 2-run single into center field. Chambliss drilled a 2-run double to left center. Dale Murphy topped off the scoring with a RBI double off the right field wall. Going to the bottom of the 8th, the Braves carried a 10-4 lead.
Philadelphia scored the final tally of the game in the bottom of the 9th inning. DeJesus tripled leading off against the Braves Carlos Diaz. With one out, DeJesus scored on a ground ball out off the bat of Rose.
Braves Notes: Ramirez (6 games) and Chambliss (5 games) both extended personal hitting streaks tonight….Atlanta has won 3 straight
Phillies Notes: Schmidt’s homer extended his hitting streak to 9 consecutive games….Manny Trillo stretched his hitting streak to 6 games with an infield single

Friday, May 28, 1982 - Houston Astros at New York Mets
Total Team Effort Nets Mets Win
New York, NY
A solid team effort led the New York Mets to a 4-2 win on Friday evening at Shea Stadium over the Houston Astros. Solid starting pitching by Pete Falcone (6 2/3 IP, 8 hits, 2 ER, 2 BB, 2 K), supported by timely hitting led the way for the Mets. In winning, New York denied Astros starter Joe Niekro (6 IP, 5 hits, 3 runs, 2 ER, 4 K) of winning for the 9th time this season.
In the bottom of the 1st, Wally Backman lined a one out single into right field. Backman would advance to third base when John Stearns followed with a line drive single to right of his own. Dave Kingman then got Backman home with a sacrifice fly to center field.
New York (17-30) continued to peck away at Niekro in the 3rd inning. Backman hit a shot into the right field corner for a one out double. Stearns again followed with a hit, this time a RBI grounder into center field.
The Mets received some help to go up 3-0 in the bottom of the 5th. Mookie Wilson reached on a one out error by Astros second baseman Phil Garner. Wilson then swiped second base and he would advance to third base on a passed ball by Houston (23-23) catcher Alan Ashby. Backman then lifted a fly ball deep enough into center field to score Wilson.
Houston finally broke through in the run column in the 7th inning, though not without a little controversy. Batting with one out, it appeared Dickie Thon had reached on an infield single. Thon did make contact with the Mets catcher John Stearns, but was initially called safe at first base. Home plate umpire Jerry Dale intervened and called Thon out on batter’s interference. As the inning played out, this was a big base runner to be denied to the Astros. With two out now and the bases empty, Tony Scott tripled to right center field. Jose Cruz then lined a RBI double off the right field wall. Falcone was through for the evening and Jesse Orosco took over. Ray Knight welcomed Orosco to the game by lining a RBI double to left center. Still needing the final out, Orosco got a ground ball off the bat of Garner. Second baseman Wally Backman mishandled the ball for an error leaving runners on the corners. Orosco then fanned Art Howe to end the inning.
Perfect execution led the Mets to their final run of the contest. Bob Bailor led off with a single into left field off the Astros Mike LaCoss. Ron Gardenhire then advanced Bailor to second base with a perfect sacrifice bunt. Bailor took third base when Gary Rajsich bounced out to the right side of the infield. Wilson then bounced a RBI single into right field putting the Mets up 4-2.
With two outs in the top of the 8th inning, the Astros put two runners on via a walk and a hit. Mets closer Neil Allen then came in and got Scott to ground out to end the threat.
Allen then nailed down his 5th save of ‘82 when he retired Houston in order in the top of the 9th inning.
Astros Notes: Houston stranded 12 runners on base in the game….the Astros have now dropped 3 straight games….Garner had his 12 game hitting streak snapped this evening
Mets Notes: Bailor has now hit safely in 8 consecutive contests….Kingman and George Foster also extended hitting streaks to 5 games tonight….Kingman now has 4 game winning RBI’s in ‘82

Friday, May 28, 1982 - San Francisco Giants at Pittsburgh Pirates
Pittsburgh Hangs On to Win
Pittsburgh, PA
John Candelaria (5 IP, 8 hits, 3 ER, 3 BB, 9 K) was outstanding early and his teammates built a 5-0 lead. Then Candelaria weakened, the Giants mounted a comeback and in the end the Pirates held on for a 6-4 win on Friday evening at Three Rivers Stadium. The Pittsburgh bats went for three home runs to begin their home stand on a positive note.
Bill Laskey (5 IP, 3 hits, 5 runs, 3 ER, 2 BB, 1 K) got off to a tough start when he walked Omar Moreno to open the bottom of the 1st inning. Moreno would steal second base and advance to third base on a throwing error by Giants catcher Bob Brenly. It was one of three errors on the night for San Francisco (22-25). Johnny Ray then brought in Moreno with a ground ball to second base.
In the bottom of the 3rd inning, Pittsburgh stretched their lead to 4-0. Moreno walked with one out and once again swiped second base. Ray then connected for his 3rd home run of the season off Laskey. One batter later, Jason Thompson struck his 11th home run of ‘82 for the Buccos.
Fielding woes continued to plague the Giants in the bottom of the 4th. Mike Easler doubled to left center to begin the inning. With one out, Candelaria hit a hard two hopper toward third baseman Tom O’Malley. The ball went through O’Malley into left field and Easler raced home.
The Giants finally tallied some runs in the top of the 6th inning off Candelaria. Jack Clark lined a double into the left field corner leading off. Jeff Leonard brought Clark home with a line drive single into left field. Candelaria then lost his control when he walked Darrell Evans and O’Malley to load the bases. He also was taken out of the game and replaced by Enrique Romo. Romo struggled at the outset of his outing by walking Johnnie LeMaster to force home a run. Pinch hitter Reggie Smith then hit into a 6-4 force play, but Evans scored on the play cutting the Pirates lead to 5-3. Romo was able to get out of the inning without allowing any further runs.
Pittsburgh (26-18) answered back with a run in the bottom of the 6th. With the bases empty and two out, Dale Berra hit his 1st home run of the season putting the Pirates up 6-3.
San Francisco had a response in the top of the 7th inning. Clark led off with his 12th home run of the season just inside the left field foul pole off Romo. Romo then set down the Giants in order to end the 7th inning.
Romo would allow a one out double to pinch hitter Dave Bergman in the top of the 8th. Pirates closer Kent Tekulve would come in to retire Joe Morgan and Milt May to get out of that trouble.
In the 9th, Tekulve walked Chili Davis leading off. He would then get Clark to rap into a 6-4-3 double play and Leonard to fly out to end the game. Tekulve earned his 9th save of the season.
Giants Notes: San Francisco left 7 runners in scoring position….of their 10 hits, 7 were for extra bases….Morgan stretched his hitting streak to 10 games….LeMaster saw his 5 game hit streak stopped tonight….the Giants are last in the National League in fielding
Pirates Notes: Ray now has 4 game winning RBI this season; he was also perfect in 9 total chances at second base this evening

Friday, May 28, 1982 - Toronto Blue Jays at Baltimore Orioles
Roenicke Pulls Orioles from Jaws of Defeat
Baltimore, MD
Down to their final two outs, it took a magical swing for the Orioles to pull out a 4-2 win on Friday evening at Memorial Stadium. The late inning heroics rewarded starting pitcher Dennis Martinez (9 IP, 6 hits, 2 ER, 2 BB, 4 K) with his 4th win of ‘82.
The visiting Blue Jays took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the 3rd inning. Alfredo Griffin led off the inning with a single to center. Griffin would be forced at second base on a grounder off the bat of teammate Damaso Garcia. Garcia then swiped second base putting himself in scoring position. Hosken Powell then lined a RBI single into center field putting Toronto (15-31) on top.
Baltimore (30-15) answered back in the bottom of the 3rd. With one out, Bobby Bonner tripled into right center field. Following an Al Bumbry strikeout, Rich Dauer lined a shot back at Blue Jays starter Jim Clancy (2 2/3 IP, 2 hits, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K). The ball hit Clancy directly in the upper right leg and rolled into foul territory. Bonner scored to tie the game. Clancy left the contest and was replaced by Roy Lee Jackson (5 2/3 IP, 2 hits, 2 ER, 2 BB, 3 K).
As Martinez and Jackson put up shut out inning after shutout inning, the game stayed knotted up at 1-1. Finally, in the top of the 7th inning Toronto broke through to take the lead. With two out and the bases empty, Griffin unloaded on a Martinez delivery sending it over the fence for his 1st home run of the season. The unlikely power source put the Blue Jays in position to steal a game from Baltimore.
Jackson was once again stellar for the Blue Jays. He would tire though in the 9th inning and ultimately it cost the Blue Jays the game. In the bottom of the 9th inning, Jackson walked John Lowenstein to begin the inning. He would bounce back to strike out Eddie Murray, but he would issue a free pass to Ken Singleton. Toronto skipper Bobby Cox called upon closer Dale Murray. Murray who has been up and down this season, mainly down but up lately would face Gary Roenicke. Roenicke picked on Murray’s second pitch and sent it over the fence to win the game for the Orioles. It was Roenicke’s 7th home run of the season.
Blue Jays Notes: Toronto has dropped 3 straight games….Barry Bonnell and Willie Upshaw both had 7 game hitting streaks snapped tonight….Griffin was also outstanding in the field at shortstop with 2 putouts and 7 assists
Orioles Notes: it was the 5th game winning RBI of the season for Roenicke and it extended his hitting streak to 6 consecutive games….Al Bumbry was busy in the outfield this evening with 8 putouts….Baltimore has won 4 straight games

Expos Edge Reds
Montreal, Quebec
An unexpected pitchers tussle took place on Friday evening at Olympic Stadium. Reds starter Frank Pastore (7 IP, 2 hits, 1 ER, 4 BB, 2 K) gave it everything he had. Expos hurler Steve Rogers (8 IP, 6 hits, 1 ER, 5 K) did the same for the home team. It came down to a late inning rally by Montreal (24-21) as they knocked off Cincinnati 2-1.
Cincinnati (12-31) struck for their only tally in the top of the 2nd inning. Dan Driessen lined a lead off single into right field. Driessen would then advance to second base on a grounder to the right side off the bat of Ron Oester. Larry Biittner would then bring Driessen home with a RBI single that was bounced into center field.
Between the second and seventh innings, Pastore would not allow a hit to the Expos. That good fortune changed in the bottom of the 8th inning. Pinch hitter Terry Francona doubled leading off, knocking Pastore out of the game. The Reds turned to their closer, Tom Hume in an attempt to shut down the Expos. Tim Raines kept the rally going by hitting a single into center field to advance pinch runner Frank Taveras to third base. Still with no outs, Andre Dawson laced a shot into the left field corner. Both Taveras and Raines scored to put Montreal up 2-1. Hume settled in to set down Al Oliver, Gary Carter and Tim Wallach, but by now the damage was done.
Jeff Reardon picked up his 5th save of the season by working a perfect 9th inning to preserve the 6th win of the season for Rogers.
Reds Notes: Driessen is still errorless at first base this season in 42 games played
Expos Notes: Montreal has strung together 3 consecutive wins….Dawson got credit for his 5th game winning RBI of ‘82….Warren Cromartie saw his N.L. best 21 game hitting streak end tonight….the Expos are the top fielding team in the National League

Friday, May 28, 1982 - Los Angeles Dodgers at Chicago Cubs
Guerrero’s 6-Pack Leads Dodgers Victory
Chicago, IL
It took two big swats by the Dodgers Pedro Guerrero to provide victory on Friday afternoon at Wrigley Field. It also took a gutty effort by starting pitcher Fernando Valenzuela (9 IP, 7 hits, 4 ER, 2 BB, 8 K) to keep L.A. in the game giving his teammate the opportunity to be the hero on this day.
Chicago (20-26) would ambush Valenzuela for 4 runs in the bottom of the 1st inning. Bump Wills and Ryne Sandberg each singled to begin the inning. Valenzuela then lost Bill Buckner on a walk and before many in the crowd were settled the Cubs had the bases loaded. Valenzuela appeared to squirm most of the way out of trouble when he got Keith Moreland to hit into a 6-4-3 double play. Wills scored, but there were now two out. Once again Valenzuela’s early control problems crept up when he then walked Leon Durham. The big nail in the coffin came when Jody Davis slugged his 4th home run of the season putting Chicago up 4-0.
Meanwhile, Dickie Noles (5 2/3 IP, 3 hits, 4 ER, 3 BB) was cruising for the Cubs. Los Angeles (35-12) got their first hit of the game with one out in the 5th. Noles then set down the first two hitters in the 6th inning before his control got away from him.
Noles would walk both Steve Sax and Ken Landreaux with two out in the 6th. Trying to crowd Steve Garvey, he plunked him with a pitch to load the bases. That is when Guerrero went to work and smacked a grand slam home run to tie the game. It was the 9th home run of the season for Guerrero.
From this point forward the pitching took over for both teams. At one point 13 consecutive Dodgers were retired. In fact, L.A.’s next hit after the 6th inning came in the 11th inning.
The Dodgers pitching was even more impressive. Between Valenzuela and Joe Beckwith, they retired the final 17 Cubs hitters in the contest.
Cubs relief pitcher Dick Tidrow would endure the wrath of the Dodgers hitters in the top of the 11th inning. Garvey bounced a one out single into left field. Then Guerrero went to work and hit his 10th home run of the season to put Los Angeles up 6-4. With two out, Rick Monday laced a double down the left field line. Bill Russell followed by bringing Monday home with a single up the middle. When all was said and done, the Dodgers walked off the Wrigley Field turf with a 7-4 victory.
Dodgers Notes: it was the 7th game winning RBI of the season for Guerrero
Cubs Notes: Durham extended his hitting streak to 5 consecutive games

Thursday, May 27, 1982 - Boston Red Sox at Seattle Mariners
Perez Wins the Game for Boston
Seattle, WA
Thursday evening at the Kingdome, Boston’s Chuck Rainey (7 2/3 IP, 3 hits, 3 BB, 2 K) and Seattle’s Floyd Bannister (9 IP, 6 hits, 1 ER, 11 K) locked up in a pitching tussle. Both starters were amazing as a 0-0 game was carried into the 9th inning.
Late in the contest, Seattle (17-31) was stymied by defensive efforts of the Red Sox. In the bottom of the 7th with a runner on first and one out, Todd Cruz hit a looping liner into right field. Boston (29-16) right fielder Dwight Evans charged the ball and made a sensational shoestring grab. Evans then fired to first base to double up base runner Rick Sweet to end the inning.
Jim Maler would lead off the bottom of the 8th inning with an apparent line drive single into right field. Charging the ball once again and fielding it on one hop, Evans again threw a strike to first base to rob Maler of a lead off single. This play would loom large when two batters later Julio Cruz doubled to left center. Tom Burgmeier replaced Rainey after the Cruz double to put down the Mariners rally.
With one out in the top of the 9th, veteran Tony Perez connected off Bannister to right center for his 3rd home run of the season to account for the lone tally in the game.
Seattle got a lead off single in the bottom of the 9th inning by Richie Zisk off Burgmeier. Burgmeier departed and was replaced by closer Mark Clear. Bobby Brown pinch ran for Zisk. Brown attempting to steal second base was thrown out by Red Sox catcher Gary Allenson. Clear then retired the next two hitters to earn his 8th save of the season.
Red Sox Notes: Reid Nichols and Carney Lansford each extended hitting streaks to 5 games….shortstop Glenn Hoffman had 9 assists this evening
Mariners Notes: Bannister tossed his 6th complete game of ‘82 and he fanned 10 or more hitters for the 5th time this season

Thursday, May 27, 1982 - Milwaukee Brewers at California Angels
7th Inning A Charm for the Angels
Anaheim, CA
They struggled for six innings to figure out the pitching of the Brewers Bob McClure (6 IP, 5 hits, 1 ER, 4 BB, 5 K). Just when they thought they had McClure solved, adversity struck. As quickly as things went bad, all became suddenly great for the California Angels on Thursday night. A 6-run uprising helped propel the Angels past the Brewers 6-5.
Milwaukee (29-15) struck for two runs in the opening inning. After traveling through the night from Milwaukee, the weary Brewers came out swinging early. Angels starter Mike Witt (6 1/3 IP, 10 hits, 3 ER, 2 BB, 2 K) opened the contest by walking lead off hitter Paul Molitor. Robin Yount then cracked a shot off the right field wall for a RBI double and the Brewers led 1-0 after two hitters. With one out, Ted Simmons bounced a single into right field to plate Yount.
A two out rally in the top of the 4th inning put Milwaukee up 3-0. Designated hitter Roy Howell lined a single to center field with two away. Charlie Moore then lined a shot over the head of Angels left fielder Brian Downing for a run scoring double.
Things didn’t look good for California (25-21) as the game headed to the bottom of the 7th inning. Fortunes would change quickly in favor of the Angels. McClure walked Bob Boone leading off and then he surrendered a single to Tim Foli. Brewers skipper Buck Rodgers then summoned Dwight Bernard from the bullpen. The Angels sent up Rod Carew to pinch hit for Ron Jackson. Bernard’s location was off as he walked Carew to load the bases. Just as quickly as the fortunes were on the Angels side, they suddenly turned the Brewers way. With the bases loaded, Downing hit a rocket at Brewers third baseman Paul Molitor. After catching the line drive, Molitor stepped on third base to complete a double play. Yet again, the fortune pendulum would swing in favor of the Angels. Bernard would reload the bases by walking Bobby Grich. Next up, Doug DeCinces would completely change this game. DeCinces launced his 11th home run of the season, a grand slam to put California up 4-3. The Angels good fortune had just begun. Reggie Jackson then lined a ball toward Brewers right fielder Charlie Moore. Moore misjudged the liner and the ball deflected off his glove for an error. Bernard’s night ended as Pete Ladd came in for the Brewers. Looking to take advantage of the opportunity, Don Baylor lined a double to left center. Jackson would score all the way from first base putting the Angels ahead 5-3. Fred Lynn was next and he chopped a grounder toward Brewers shortstop Robin Yount. Yount’s throw sailed over the head of first baseman Cecil Cooper allowing Baylor to score. Ladd finally got the third out when Boone flied out to end the inning. When the dust settled, California led 6-3 heading to the 8th inning.
The 8th inning was quiet, but the 9th became very interesting. Luis Sanchez came in to begin the inning for the Angels and was immediately touched for a lead off triple by Moore. Sanchez settled in getting pinch hitter Jim Gantner to fly out and Molitor to ground out. Yount stepped in as the last hope for Milwaukee. He didn’t disappoint as he slugged his 12th home run of the season cutting the Angels advantage to 6-5. California manager Gene Mauch then called on Don Aase to face Cecil Cooper. Aase has been pitching very well lately and there is no hotter hitter in the American League then Cooper (0-for-5 today) presently. Aase won this match up as he fanned Cooper to seal the Angels win earning his 3rd save of the season.
Brewers Notes: Cooper’s 5 game hitting streak ended tonight….Simmons hitting streak is now at 8 consecutive games
Angels Notes: DeCinces and Foli have now each hit safely in 5 straight contests….it was the 7th game winning RBI of ‘82 for DeCinces

Thursday, May 27, 1982 - Baltimore Orioles at Texas Rangers
Orioles Dismantle Rangers
Arlington, TX
On Thursday evening at Arlington Stadium, Baltimore (29-15) completed a 3-game sweep of Texas. The Orioles bats stayed hot rapping out 18 hits in a 13-3 win. For the series, Baltimore out scored Texas 29-9.
Baltimore put up four runs in the top of the 3rd inning to take early control of the contest. The first six hitters in the inning all reached base off Texas starter Charlie Hough (3 IP, 10 hits, 8 ER, 3 BB, 4 K). Al Bumbry opened the inning with a single to right field. Hough then walked Rich Dauer before allowing a RBI single to Eddie Murray. Ken Singleton then brought in Dauer with a single to center field. Gary Roenicke walked before Cal Ripken Jr. brought in two runs with a single up the middle. Hough then settled in temporarily by fanning Jim Dwyer and getting Rick Dempsey to hit into a double play.
A 7-run 4th inning sealed the game for the Orioles. Lenn Sakata led off with a double to left center. Sakata advanced to third base when Bumbry lined a single into right field. Dauer then was issued a free pass to load the bases. Murray then hit a broken bat grounder to the right side. Rangers first baseman Dave Hostetler attempted to avoid the flying barrel of the bat as well as snag the ball. He avoided the bat, but the ball rolled into right field for a 2-run single. Hough was through and Danny Darwin came in. Once again, Darwin struggled mightily in this game. Facing his first hitter, Darwin allowed a sacrifice fly off the bat of Ken Singleton. The next five hitters all collected singles off Darwin to lengthen the Baltimore lead to 10-0. The quintet was made up of Roenicke, Ripken Jr., Dwyer, Dempsey and Sakata. After getting the second out of the inning, Darwin walked Dauer with the bases loaded to bring in the final run of the inning.
Darwin departed two hitters into the 6th inning. Dwyer and Dempsey went back-to-back to begin the inning stretching the Orioles lead to 13-0. It was the 4th home run of the year for Dwyer and the 3rd of the season for Dempsey.
Texas (13-29) finally got to Orioles starter Sammy Stewart (6 2/3 IP, 6 hits, 2 ER, 2 K) in the bottom of the 6th. Mike Richardt singled back through the middle to start things. Buddy Bell then crushed a Stewart pitch into left center for a run scoring double. After Larry Parrish flied out, Hostetler brought in Bell with a line drive single into center field.
The Rangers tallied their final tally off Ross Grimsely. Grimsley walked Bell and Parrish to begin the inning. After setting down Hostetler and George Wright, Grimsley yielded a single to Lee Mazzilli that scored Bell.
Orioles Notes: Murray recorded his 4th game winning RBI of the season….Roenicke has hit safely in 5 straight games….Ripken Jr. sparkled at shortstop with 11 total chances this evening
Rangers Notes: Parrish extended his hitting streak to 9 consecutive games….Dan Boitano pitched 1-hit ball over 4 shutout innings with 3 strikeouts

Wednesday, May 26, 1982 - Detroit Tigers at Seattle Mariners
Tigers Hang On
Seattle, WA
Once they took control of tonight’s game, it appeared that Detroit would have an easy road to the W column. Seattle had other ideas and made the game interesting at the end. Detroit would hang on for a 5-4 victory on Wednesday evening at the Kingdome.
The Mariners actually struck first, in the bottom of the 1st inning. Richie Zisk doubled down the right field line with two out. Teammate Al Cowens followed by banging a shot off the right field wall for a RBI double scoring Zisk. From there, Detroit starter Milt Wilcox (7 1/3 IP, 5 hits, 1 ER, 5 BB, 5 K) handcuffed the Mariners.
Detroit (28-16) broke through with a 4-spot in the top of the 4th inning off the Mariners Mike Moore (7 1/3 IP, 7 hits, 5 ER, 6 BB, 3 K). With one out, Lance Parrish chopped a ball toward Seattle shortstop Paul Serna. Serna’s off balance throw was in the dirt and Parrish advanced to second base. Moore then lost his control walking John Wockenfuss and Howard Johnson to load the bases. Veteran Richie Hebner then cleared the bases with a double to left center to put the Tigers up 3-1. Chet Lemon moved Hebner to third base with a ground ball single into left field. Hebner then scored on a sacrifice fly by Tom Brookens.
Carrying a 4-1 lead into the 8th inning, Detroit would put up what proved to be a very big run. Johnson singled with one out and then swiped second base. Seattle (17-30) skipper Rene Lachemann would call upon Mike Stanton to attempt to shut down the Tigers. He got Hebner to fly out for the second out of the inning, but he was unable to get Lemon. Lemon lined a single into center field. Johnson raced toward home plate and beat the throw of Mariners center fielder Joe Simpson.
Up 5-1 heading to the bottom of the 9th, it appeared the Tigers had the game well in hand. Dave Rucker who came on for Wilcox would allow one out singles to pinch hitters Bobby Brown and Dave Edler. Rucker then fanned Todd Cruz for the second out of the inning. He would lose Julio Cruz to a walk that loaded the bases. Tigers manager Sparky Anderson stuck with Rucker against pinch hitter Jim Maler. Maler ruined the strategy when he lined a shot into the left center field gap. All three runners scored on the 3-run double by Maler. Anderson would go to Dave Tobik out of the bullpen to face Richie Zisk. Zisk popped out to Johnson at third base to end the game. Tobik earnerd his 4th save of the season.
Tigers Notes: the win broke a 2 game losing streak….Hebner got his 3rd game winning RBI of the season….for the second time this season, Larry Herndon has a hitting streak of at least 10 games after collecting a double and triple tonight….Johnson has hit safely in 9 consecutive games

Wednesday, May 26, 1982 - Pittsburgh Pirates at Los Angeles Dodgers
Pirates Bounce Back In Extra Innings
Los Angeles, CA
Tonight’s game at Dodger Stadium was most likely won by the Pirates in the bottom of the 1st inning. How? One might ask that question about a most interesting statement. To the unobservant, the game was won in the top of the 10th inning. To the baseball purist, it was the bottom of the 1st inning where this game was decided.
Pittsburgh (25-18) went up 1-0 in the top of the 1st inning. Bill Madlock singled off the Dodgers Jerry Reuss (7 IP, 5 hits, 1 ER, 3 K) with two out and the bases empty. Madlock would then swipe second base before scoring on a ground ball single to center field off the bat of teammate Jason Thompson.
Leading early, the Pirates Rick Rhoden (7 1/3 IP, 6 hits, 1 BB, 5 K) took the hill in the bottom of the 1st. Steve Sax leading off lined a shot to left center. Pittsburgh left fielder Mike Easler got an incredible jump on the ball and snagged it in the gap for the first out of the inning. Ken Landreaux followed Sax by ripping a shot to right center. Pirates right fielder Lee Lacy took the correct angle on the ball and robbed Landreaux of extra bases. Rhoden then fanned Steve Garvey and the inning was over. What could have been for the Dodgers ended up as a 1-2-3 inning for Rhoden.
Reuss and Rhoden went pitch-for-pitch deep into this contest. In fact, Pittsburgh was two outs away from victory when the Dodgers finally scored.
Rick Monday batting with one out in the bottom of the 9th inning off Pirates closer Kent Tekulve ripped a shot down the right field line. Monday ended up at second base with a double. Los Angeles (34-12) shortstop Bill Russell then brought home Monday with a triple to right center. With the winning run on third base and two outs to get, Tekulve buckled down. With a drawn in infield, Mike Scioscia bounced out to Thompson at first base. Pinch hitter Derrell Thomas then lined out to Pirates second baseman Johnny Ray to end the inning.
In the top of the 10th inning, Omar Moreno began the Pittsburgh victory rally with a one out single off Dodgers closer Steve Howe. Pinch hitter Bill Robinson then took Howe deep and out of the park for his 4th home run of ‘82.
Rod Scurry came in and sewed up the Pittsburgh win by recording his 2nd save of the season. He would retire Sax and Landreaux before Garvey singled with two out. Scurry then got Pedro Guerrero to hit a harmless grounder to short to end the game.
Pirates Notes: over 80 1/3 innings this season, Rhoden has a 1.90 ERA….Pittsburgh salvaged their lone victory in the three game set tonight
Dodgers Notes: in 81 innings, Reuss has walked 7 hitters in ‘82….turning two double plays tonight, L.A. is 3rd in the N.L. having turned 37 this season

Jenkins Pitches Cubs to Victory
San Diego, CA
Tossing a complete game, Ferguson Jenkins (9 IP, 9 hits, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K) backed by home runs off the bats of teammates Keith Moreland and Jody Davis led Chicago to a 5-2 win on Wednesday evening in San Diego.
Chicago (20-25) began the scoring in the top of the 2nd inning with two runs. Davis led off with a walk off Padres starter Chris Welsh (4 1/3 IP, 9 hits, 4 ER, 4 BB, 2 K). Moreland followed by connecting on his 4th home run of ‘82.
In the bottom of the same inning, San Diego (16-29) answered back with a single tally. Sixto Lezcano began the inning by hitting his 6th home run of the season.
The Cubs increased their advantage to 3-1 in the 3rd inning. Bill Buckner walked with one out and advanced to second base on a two out single by Davis. Moreland then bounced a RBI single into left field to score Buckner.
San Diego had a reply in the bottom of the 3rd. Welsh bounced a single into right field to begin the inning. Gene Richards then lined a shot into left center for a RBI double, cutting the Cubs lead to 3-2.
Welsh would get knocked out of the game in the 5th inning when Chicago stretched their advantage to 4-2. Leon Durham started the inning with a single and Davis followed with a single of his own. With one away, Steve Henderson got Durham home with a single up the middle. Eric Show then came in out of the Padres bullpen to toss a double play ball to halt the Cubs uprising.
Jenkins would blank the Padres over the final six innings as he scattered five hits over that time.
Davis rounded out the scoring in the 9th inning when he led off with his 3rd home run of the year off Padres closer Luis DeLeon.
Cubs Notes: Chicago stranded 12 base runners in the contest….Moreland was credited with his 4th game winning RBI of the season….Durham has now hit safely in 5 consecutive games….Jenkins tossed his 3rd complete game of ‘82
